BRILLIANT GRIPPING READ

A really great story that looks at a family trying to cope with Postpartum Depression and an extreme case at that. I really liked the way Prowse shows how it can affect anyone, even those who seem to 'have it all.' It was good reading about a family in London and an insight into their fabulous life, that is until Jessica's life starts to unravel. The emotions are very real, I felt myself willing her well and really caring about the characters. I like her writing style very much and I love the way this story unfolds. A gripping read, I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend. A must read.

Review: 'A Mother's Story' by Amanda Prowse

Jessica simply knows she and her new husband Matthew were meant to end up together. From the first moment she looked into his eyes, Jessica has been head over heels madly in love with Matthew, and luckily he feels the exact same way about her. The two of them are truly happy together, which is also why Jessica can’t wait to start their lives as wife and husband together. When Jessica unexpectedly gets pregnant at the age of twenty-three, Matthew is over the moon and can’t wait to go on this new adventure together. Yet, as soon as the baby is born after a complicated birth, Jessica can’t seem to find the maternal feelings and strong love she is supposed to feel. Instead, she starts to feel worse and worse and she can’t help but think about how her and Matthew’s life was supposed to be and what she could possibly do to make things better.

This novel deals with an incredibly sensitive and quite controversial topic, namely post-natal depression. Amanda Prowse is a wonderful author and she deals with this subject in an incredibly realistic and touching way. This novel really tugged on my heartstrings and I couldn’t help but feel for the characters and what they go through. Jessica is a heroine that really spoke to me; from the start it is obvious that she and Matthew make such a great couple and the love between them just warmed my heart. It was almost the perfect kind of love which is often portrayed in films and you somehow know something is going to come and ruin it all, which of course also happens to Matthew and Jessica. What they go through is told in an incredibly gripping and heartbreaking way, and I can’t even imagine what it would be like to go through something like this.

The story is told from the perspective of main protagonist Jessica, but in two different ways. On the one hand we see diary extracts from Jessica in the here and now, and on the other hand we get to see everything that has happened to Jessica in the past, mainly told from her own point of view. I personally thought the switches between these different chapters was very strong and really showed the development of Jessica’s character. The book has a lovely cast of characters which are all well-developed, such as Jessica’s husband Matthew and her best friend Polly. Amanda Prowse is a great author, there’s no doubt about that. This story really gripped me and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since I finished the book. If you’re looking for a feel-good read, this is not the book to pick up. But if you’re looking for a heart wrenching, gripping and well-written women’s fiction title, then ‘A Mother’s Story’ definitely won’t disappoint.

Deeply moving Story. Tissues a must.

This is by far Amanda Prowse’s best novel to-date. She is not afraid of tackling a sensitive issue such creating a character in Jessica and the perfect World that has just been created and then watch in dramatic fashion how it came crashing down through post-natal depression. Like I said a very sensitive subject it is packed with emotion and so very delicately handled.
As you read through this powerful book you enter the world of the ‘perfect couple’ in Jessica and Matthew, a young couple whose lives together as a married couple has just started, not planning to have a family until Matthew has gained promotion and Jessica has proved herself in her chosen career as an illustrator. Their passion for each other is moves from page to page, then suddenly Jessica is pregnant not at all as per their perfect plan, but they are young and in love and want to become parents even at this early stage of their marriage.
Their Daughter is born through a Caesarean but this is where the story really takes on that of a thriller. At first as you begin to see Jessica drift away from her daughter and her life as a young Mother becomes distressing as you move across each page Jessica gets medical help and for a little while you see improvement but you always fear something is coming and then Jessica’s life really begins to fall apart.
Over the course of each chapter you move from real hatred for Jessica but you will be moved by the story as it really unfolds in front of your eyes, and they will water as you feel real pain and heartache for everyone involved in this outstanding book. At the end I felt a sense of loss and helplessness as you just wanted to be involved. That is what Amanda has brought to the reader here a real personal tragedy unfolding and there is nothing you can do.
The one thing that I really liked from the start was the diary entries that come throughout the book it add a real sense of reality and it starts to tell you a story of the drama to come.
Amanda’s prose makes the story flow and you will find it very difficult to put this book down when you first open it. Be warned make sure you have a box of tissues to hand as you will almost certainly need them.
This is a book that should be read wildly as it has opened my eyes to post-natal depression more than ever.

Touching Story - highly recommended

I was lucky enough to preview the Japanese version of the anime'. Now I have to get my hands on everything to do with this series. And for the reviewers who are squeamish about yuri -- I watched this BECAUSE it was yuri. It's about time we have a unabashed anime story that meets the subject of women loving each other head on, which Stawberry Panic does with heart and substance. It deals with very serious topics, losing someone dear to death, rivalry, duty and honor, and coming of age. To me it was a very satisfying story that touched me like nothing else has lately. I will be looking for each novel and manga when they are released -- with joy!

if it's as good as the anime....

iv watched the two seasons of the anime, and if the manga is anything like the anime then you will probably laugh and cry. (hopefully not at the same time :P)

If you are a guy looking for some hot lesbian fiction then this is NOT for you. the pace is slow, focusing much more on romance and love than lesbianism that is raunchy or sexy. the characters and story are sweet and although there appears to be no real plot... it does surface itself eventually. making (what you were enjoying anyway) even better.

This also has a little 'slice of life' and is school oriented.

This is classified by many as Yuri, which is just girl-love, if your a girl who is worried about yuri then don't be worried :) there is much more sexuality and fanservice in the Full Metal panic series -by far- to compare.

it can be a little explicit, intercourse is assumed, not shown. Between some couples. More yuri than Marimite, but i preferd the artwork in strawberryp! anyway :)

Aesthetics - the moral imperative

The anime was a fine iteration into the genre, as well as the manga - quirky, realistic animation, beautiful artwork and an original storyline blending into a great franchise full of livery and twist.
All three - anime, manga and especially novel - are adaptions for the rest of us of a story that must be told - this Strawberry Panic. To refer to it as simply 'a yuri' is almost degrading to the quality of each installment.
It's great to finally have a well-written novel that tells what should be a classic story all over again, this time for those of us who find beauty in words. Strawberry Panic a fine example of the concept of the immortalized story, that will shine in picture, on screen, and, most importantly, in the written word.

is the grass greener on the other side?

one by one she saw her fellow cell mates die when they were fighting against the change. the same was happening to her, it was taking everything she had to fight the animal lurking inside her mind and body. she didn’t want to give in. in the cell next to her, the young woman was battling the same “demon”. she wanted to be strong for both of them and she was sure they would succeed in fighting of the “demon” inside. that wasn’t counting on the guards, they want the change! being warned of she refused to listen. not to the guards, not to the animal within. however she did listen to the other woman fighting in the cell next to her. when the guards enter the cell next to her it becomes clear her cell hasn’t been locked and her animal urges her to run, to escape. one moment she hesitates but then she chooses freedom. she’ll fight for her freedom.

whether she gets out or not i’m not telling, ha! you’ll have to pick up this prequel.
it’s a fast paced story that tells of the struggles inside a person, the battle with another being inside of you. the taste of freedom and the desire to stay that way, betrayal for it being taken away again.
there is little that isn’t covered in the short introduction to a new series.

The 3 stars "are based on my preferences only" Not on how well the book was written.....

Savage is a Prequle for a new Dark Shifter series “Underground Kings.” This is my first book by Kim Faulks. As I started to read the book, It was not to my liking and I almost quit. But I didn't and I'm glad once I got past the first parts of the book that I didn't like (based on my preferences only.) This is also my first Dark Paranormal of any kind. So it was quite different.

The story-line flowed and was well written. The plot was thick. The characters were well developed and their personalities fit well within the story.

Mia had been raised in the cell of the Carlson Corpration from birth. At this point Mia was close to beginning her first transformation into a wolf-shifter. There were 10 women in this study group of experiments and 8 women had aready died trying to transform.

That left Mia and her sister Sasha. Sasha was already in the threws of transformation. Mia telling her the entire time to push her wolf back. There was a terrible comotion in Shashas cell, when Mia looked it was horifying.

This however gave Mia a chance to run and Sasha kept telling her to run and get away. Sasha's voice echoed in my head telling me to run, run no matter what. Even though I knew she was dead

Mia and her wolf were at odds. Mia refused to shift and her wolf was willing to kill them both. As Mia found it harder to run, the dogs and guards were getting closer. When they reached Mia she fought with all she had. She was hurt, she was tired; they were going to take her back to the cell where she would die like the 8 other women and her sister.

Did they get her back to the cell? Pick up a copy and read about allof the violence and passion I left out! Even though this story-line was not to my tastes. I have to know what happens to Mia so I will be picking up book 1 of the series.

Reading this book, I was Mia. I heard the sounds of the forest, felt the dirt under my nails.

“The wolf paced my walls. The wolf paced inside me. Watching, waiting for an unguarded moment where she could seize control. Her growl tore through my head. No matter how hard I tried to block her out, I felt her power.”

Stuck in a cell of the Carlson Corporation, Mia’s first change is upon her. All that have changed before her have died. She is terrified. She feels the wolf under her skin, telling her to fight, to run. Mia manages to escape, with the guards chasing close on her heels.

The chase. The fight. The struggle to survive as she closes her eyes to give up. The smell of wolf, scent of the alpha. Strong arms cradling her and keeping her safe.

Reading this book, I was Mia. I heard the sounds of the forest, felt the dirt under my nails. When she finally changed, I trembled as well. The sounds of bones crunching and the feel of fur growing. The scent of wolf. Amazing!

Two distinct, yet related, studies form the basis for Martin's contention that an alternative politics must be based on the body engaged in performance: first, an inside view of the making of a modern dance displays the sources of power for a social body; and second, a comparison of political theatre in the Soviet twenties and American sixties identifies the way in which the body's potential for politics changes. A sustained theoretical discussion that critiques semiotic and phenomenological approaches to the body and outlines a body politics links the two studies.

Performing artists concerned with the political aspects of their work; sociologists engaged in the study of problems of culture and everyday life; and literary theorists involved with the application of the tools of literary criticism to political problems will find that the perspectives expressed in this groundbreaking examination of the contemporary theory and history of the body form a compelling argument for the extent to which the body can become a source of political activity.
