Amazon.com Review
A Q&A with Sarah Kay

Question: How old were you when you started writing poetry?

Sarah Kay: I’ve been making poems since I could string words together. Before I knew how to write, I used to follow my mother around the house and yell, "Poem!" until she found a pen and paper to write down my dictation. I think that’s why she taught me how to write early on, so I would stop making her do it for me.

Question: Are your parents poets? Did they influence your interest in poetry?

Sarah Kay: From kindergarten through fourth grade I brought my lunch to school with me every day. And every day for those five years, one of my parents wrote me a poem and tucked it in my lunchbox. It was usually on a colored piece of paper, folded in half. They were short poems that were sort of Dr. Seuss-y or Shel Silverstein-esque. They made poetry something to look forward to. Each note was a story, a message, a secret, a rhyme; each note made me stop whatever I was doing and surrender to the surprise inside. I don’t think either one of them considers themselves poets, but they definitely gave me a hunger (wink!) for poetry.

Question: Did you always perform your poetry?

Sarah Kay: Absolutely not. All of my early poetry was strictly journal poetry. I had terrible stage fright and never wanted to be in the spotlight. It wasn’t until I was 14 that I discovered Spoken Word Poetry at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City. I was adopted by a wonderful community of poets and even though my stage fright didn’t disappear, the reward of being part of such an amazing group of people was enough to drown out the fear.

Question: What did your mother say when she first heard your poem, "B"?

Sarah Kay: I had a really hard time writing that poem. When I finally finished it, I called my mother on the phone from my freshman dorm at college and read the entire thing to her. I was really emotional by the end of it. When I finished the last line, I waited to hear what she would say. After a long pause she said, "That’s nice, Missy. Can you read me the beginning again? I think I heard a grammatical error." That’s why I love her. She’s very practical.

Question: What’s the coolest thing that’s ever happened to you on stage?

Sarah Kay: I travel around the country performing and teaching Spoken Word Poetry in schools with Phil Kaye and Project V.O.I.C.E. It’s exhausting and exhilarating, and I count my blessings every day that I get to do what I do. A lot of really cool things happen on stage. The coolest? A couple of years ago we performed at a middle school in Southern California. It was the first time we had ever performed there and it was the first time anyone in the school had ever seen Spoken Word. We were nervous about it, because it was a pretty conservative school, but everyone really enjoyed themselves. The next year, we were invited back to the same school. Halfway through our performance, we asked if anybody in the audience had a poem they wanted to share and a little boy came bolting up onto the stage. He didn’t even raise his hand. When he got up there he said, "I wrote this poem the day after you left last year. I’ve been waiting all year for a chance to perform it for you." That was the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me on stage. Second place would probably be getting a standing ovation at the TED conference. Although at the time I didn’t think it was cool. I was just freaking out. I was worried that the audience was clapping for too long and was terrified that they were taking up too much time. TED is very strict about time limits. I was convinced I would be pulled off stage.

Question: Who is Sophia Janowitz? And why illustrations?

Sarah Kay: Sophia Janowitz is my oldest friend. When we were three months old, we had our first playdate in the park in our neighborhood. We’ve been friends ever since. When we were little, we used to make art projects together. I would tell Sophia stories and Sophia would make amazing art out of whatever random material was around. When we graduated college, we moved into an apartment together in Brooklyn and returned to our childhood practice of project-making. When I decided to make "B" into a book, I wanted it to be more than just a transcript of the poem. I really wanted it to be its own object, with its own personality. I knew Sophia was the woman for the job. Thank goodness she said yes.

Question: Last question. What color rain boots do you have?

Sarah Kay: My last pair was black with white polka dots. My mother found them for me at one of the stores at Union Square in New York City. But they have sprung a few leaks. Maybe I need a new pair.

This culminated into Kay receiving a standing ovation at the TED 2011 Conference where she performed B. I am a huge fan of Sarah Kay. She is a beautiful poet, she is amazing with words and just touches my heart. I love listening to her and reading her poems to my campers. My campers definitely know how much I love this poem and I am so happy to have a copy of it. This poem has always been one of my favorites, but i am so happy I own a hard copy of it now. I officially do not have to look up the words online to read it for chapel to my lovely ladies. They definitely enjoy it and the illustrations are awesome. I am very happy to have bought this book and it is definitely worth the buy. I would buy it again if I loss this one (knock on wood I don't lose it). If you have not read this yet, please do, you will absolutely love it. I love her incredibly and would love to see her live. She is amazing and I actually saw her on ted talks. Ted talks are awesome and Sarah Kay should get 83789473208 awards for being so stinking awesome. Love love love love love her! Buy this book and you will not be disappointed. The book is a bit small though. It is about the size of your hand completely spread out. even though it is small, I am very pleased. Thank you sarah kay for being amazing.

Inspiration from Parent to Daughter
By Jason Melo Hall
Great words which are inspirational for a kid. The pictures are lacking for a child, as there is no color.

some of my fav quotes:

“Life will hit you hard in the face, wait for you to get back up just so it can kick you in the stomach. But getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air.”

"...don’t you ever apologize for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining."

"“Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.” "

“I have seen the best of you, and the worst of you, and I choose both."

Review: B, by Sarah Kay
By Robert Zimmermann
I first heard this poem performed quite awhile ago. I was just starting to listen to spoken word poetry through the IndieFeed: Performance Poetry podcast, and from that I was searching youtube for various poets and videos. I came across Sarah Kay and fell in love with what I heard.

The performance I listened to was from the TED conference, referenced in the description. It became one of my favorite poems to listen to. This is why I was happy to find out that the poem was available in print. I hadn't read a spoken word poem before. I didn't know what to expect. Would the emotions, the power, or the essence Sarah Kay brought to this poem through speaking it out translate to the page and move me? Well it did.

I'm one to enjoy seeing words on a page. I like to see how they are placed on that page; how the poet wishes his or her words to be visualized on the page. For B, there may not be many lines and there may not be many words, but B holds the beauty Kay's performance in how it's presented. There are illustrations to go along with the text and I think that makes the experience that much better.

The reader is able to slowly soak in the poem over roughly 50 pages, when a less creative and resourceful poet may only have used 2 or 3 pages for a poem the same length. At first I had at hard time justifying paying for one poem that I knew only takes the poet a few minutes to read, but I'm glad I didn't let that stop me from trying it out.

I'm happy to have B and Sarah Kay on my shelf. This has become one of my favorite books of poetry. I'm happy to have it in my collection.

Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind and Naked, by Gene Thornton

World renowned and critically acclaimed Hip-Hop artist Malice of the Clipse had achieved what many would consider the "America Dream". Coming from modest beginnings in Virginia Beach, he acquired a life of splender and luxury, it would seem to any "outsider looking in" that things could not be any more complete.

With a beautiful family, a big home, sport cars, fame, and the respect of his community, who could have guessed the popular rapper was dealing with matters of life, both physical and spiritual? While the world saw him at his best, he was actually at his worst. This phenomenal and life-changing story should remind us all that the devil paints a pretty picture.

A must read for anyone who has gone through some things
By Christian
Hip hop. Hip hop is my culture, it's the culture I grew up with and fell in love with as I am an 1982 born 80's baby, so I have been around about as long as hip hop has. I've heard it all, and i've been thorough every era. What can I say? In a culture where keeping it real has more supposed weight and value than telling the truth does, and people rather hear about how much dope you have sold or how many women you have, whether it be true or not; Malice shares with us his life story in an all to revealing, all too real fashion and style of delivery. I mean, with him and his brother pretty much being the pioneers of coke rap, why would he tell all about the struggles and trials and tribulations that he has endured, and how him giving his life to Christ made a change in his life for the better, especially when he's a high profile artist with a drug dealing past? Why? Simply put, because God told him to. Now you may not believe in God and you may not have had an experience where he has told you to move, but when God tells you to move, you move, whether you want to or not.

Most artist would just continue to "put on." Selling dope, selling records, and facing foreclosure doesn't mix, especially when you're excelling at doing both. So, with that said, why would anyone want to bear those truths? We all remember Mase with his pastoring, and coming back to rap, and now back pastoring; I don't sense that this will be the case with Malice, because like I said before, he pioneered coke rap, but through the music and the website and now the book, he promotes life change for the better, genuinely, realistically and truthfully.

[...]

Read the book. It made me take a look within myself, and i'm sure it'll do the same for you. Thank you Malice for the book as I have always been a Clipse fan since I first heard Grindin', but now as I can relate to your story because I too am seeking Christ for a true change in my life, I am an even bigger and forever a Clipse fan. Much continued success to you and your brother. Keep putting out that real because youngins need to see and hear both sides of the game, positive and negative. Thank you.

Similar to the raps...
By cainspain
Nearly done with this quick read and I am starting to become aware of similarities between listening to the rapper Malice on tape (CD, download or whatever) and reading the man's words in print (or Amazon Ipad download). An enjoyable Clipse song has a clever, catchy title, some realistic scenarios made appealing when delivered with a sense of shame without being regretful, a few choice moments that only someone who has had experience will recognize and appreciate and then a quick wrap-up.

This book has the same style and feel. The story within itself is not too detailed or entertaining for that matter. The moments of finding a relationship with God through scripture, an indifferent attitude brought on by inactivity in spiritual matters coupled with monetary success, and the subtle humility of a man who seems to be a bit self-absorbed (as we all can be), still makes for a good read. Though not as fluid in prose as his raps may have been with rhythmic poetry, it is still a coherent account of a man who demonstrates a level of faith that can be described as belief seeking true passionate inner purpose and happiness.

Astounding
By Jared
Hip Hop music, in its true nature, is always been about expressing who you are. Being unafraid to show others the complete you: Strengths and Flaws. Good and Evil. Elated and Depressed. This book is a shining example of that. A curtain has been lifted and we are exposed to the scene behind the stage and are offered a glimpse into Malice's hell and his heaven. Being a fan of hip hop my entire life I can't express enough how refreshing it is to see someone of fame and magnitude speak on enriching your life spiritually. When these types of books are written it only dissapoints in one way. TOO SHORT. I know that there are a lot of lost souls out there(not just needing to be "saved") but people who dont have the rolemodels they need around them and forced to look up to sports stars and musicians. They need books like these to see and understand that there are more important things in this life besides money and fame. They need Gene Thornton Jr. This book is a must have for any hip hop fan or anyone in general who needs some guidance. This is a testimonial in the growth of hip hop and its ability to reach outside of the billboard charts. After finishing this book I wished it was longer, but maybe thats the point...i am spiritually hungry for more...
