About the Author

Anne Gerritsen is Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Warwick. Her previous publications include Ji'an Literati and the Local in Song-Yuan-Ming China (2007).

The final scene brings the audience back to a modern day Baghdad with the wail of air raid sirens threatening the rich culture and history that are embodied by these tales.

About the Author
Mary Zimmerman is a professor of performance studies at Northwestern University. In 1998, she was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, and in 2002, she won the Tony Award for Best Director. She has adapted-directed Metamorphoses, The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, The Odyssey, The Arabian Nights, Eleven Rooms of Proust, and Journey to the West. Mostly recently she directed and wrote the libretto for Galileo Galilee, the new opera by Philip Glass, which premiered at the Goodman Theatre.

An excellent piece for educational theatre

I am a theatre teacher and have read several (read around 100) plays looking for a play that 1)has several significant female roles, 2) has literary merit, 3)has a story with some heart 4)has humor and 5)will stretch my actors in ways they have not worked before. Mary Zimmerman's THE ARABIAN NIGHTS has all that and more. It really is a fantastic piece built around the tale of The Arabian Nights but using stories that are not overtold. Every time I read this script I discover more and more to it. Although it has some clever notes from the original production of this play, there is PLENTY of room for new creation including an improvisational idea for a portion of the script and an allusion to modern day Iraq at the end of the play. I hope we are able to secure the rights to do this show because I am looking forward to directing this play with my students. Even if you don't produce the play, it is well worth reading.

Mary Zimmerman is the writer and director of the stage play The Arabian Nights: A Play. Her creative technique is to deeply research a subject, often ancient writings or even drawings, and then to work collaboratively with her cast and designers to find the best ways to dramatize the material, creating a scrip as she moves along.

She was awarded a genius grant and well deserves it.

The resultant play, in this case, is poetic, beautiful, surprising and altogether wonderful.

The Arabian Nights by Mary Zimmer was one of those life's moments, that truly amazed me and opened my perception of live performance. Performed by the Manhatten Theatre Company in Mud-Town New York, the evening was a tapestry of sight and a delicacy of sound, for the author'a words were scintillating. This should be a modern classic, a precursor to her wonderous Metamorphoses, which I also had the opportunity to see in New York.

Hello nurse!

Domestic discipline lovers who enjoy medical kink, this story is for you. I am not sure why it took me so long to get to this book. I loved it. The medical play in this story is deliciously erotic. It is light compared to some of the darker ones I've read. It is sweet, a bit embarrassing and totally hot. Who doesn't like a doctor and nurse taking a "young girl" to task? Sign me up!

Melissa is a naughty girl. She parties and calls in sick when she really is not ill. When she is outed by her foolish posting on a social media, Dr. Ben and his wife Barbara take her to task. Honestly, if I had bosses like Dr. Ben and Barbara, I would be all for corporal punishment at work. It may make me work harder for the rewards and not be as stressed out when I make mistakes. Between the exam, enema, slight age play and medical kink, my panties are soaked.

Medical kink is not for everyone. For me, it works out really well and Ms. Archer gives just enough description to see and feel it. The feeling part is based upon Melissa and Barbara's view when they are taken to task. It gives a reader a vicarious high. When Jason Jennings is introduced to this play, it takes the heat up a notch. Melissa and Jason's budding relationship is darling. The two are too cute together and really adds to the sweetness of this story. Their kinky exploration may cause a few readers to pause and spend a little "me-time" before finishing off the book. This book definitely plays into my fantasies and it is well written.

Highly recommended to light kinky readers who have a taste for playing doctor and nurse.

They have a D/d relationship and also like to role play

This is the second book in this series. The first is Melissa’s Punishment Exam, which is about Melissa getting punished after Barbara and Ben discover that she had lied to them about being sick. Melissa has to come back to work after her punishment, but she is embarrassed to. Eventually she does come in and is reassured that there is now a clean slate. We read more about Ben and Barbara’s marriage. They have a D/d relationship and also like to role play. Jason and Melissa start a D/d relationship as well.

I really enjoyed this story. There is a LOT of spanking and discipline. They are all very open about their needs. I can't wait to see if there will be a 3rd book with Ben’s Uncle Cyril. I give this 5 stars.

This was a fun steamy read. We met these characters in a previous book but this book stands alone. Jason has his hands full with Melissa, their journey is a wild ride and romance blooms.

I Wish I Had Read This Book When I Was A Teenager!

We are living in a super competive society where the kids who can read, think and are respectful will prosper, while the children who do not learn those things will, most likely, find it difficult to earn a good living in today's market place. That element of RESPECT is key. How we treat one another often determines the schools we attend, the jobs we acquire, the friends we attract and someday, even the individual we marry. Respectful behavior is not innate - we're not born knowing how to be confident, considerate and caring human beings.
Brad Henning has written an excellent road map for teenagers that helps explain why peers act the way they do and how best to maximize potential, the potential of others and personal potential as well. Teenagers will love Brad's style of writing - direct, entertaining, easy to read, educational without the ring of adult nagging. This isn't a lecture, it's a real eye-opener for all kids. Brad answers broad questions about high school peers, girls, boys, relationships, commitment, breaking up,love, sex and the meaning of it all. And he does so in a way that is well researched and down right fun to read. I shared this book with my 21-year old daughter - and we both had the same reaction - and said the same thing, "I wish I had read this book when I was a teenager!"

An absolute must read for everyone

Unless you plan on being a hermit your entire life then you need this book. Personally, I wish I had read this book some thirty years ago. Geared toward high school students, this book is easy to read. It tells you what love is and what it's not. It also tells you how to have great sex for the rest of your life.
Basically, if you plan to engage in dating to find a spouse, this is a book you must read.

As a mother of five ( aged 13 though 20) and someone who has worked with teens for the last 18 plus years I have to say this is one book every parent, youth leader, and teen should read. Our copy has been well passed around and currently both my daughter and the boy who has asked to date her are reading it. (his parents request). It is a fun, easy read that puts the subject of teens, love, dating etc into perspective for both sexes.

Book Review: Mastering Red Hat Linux 9

Wow! Mastering Red Hat Linux 9 is a huge and very complete guide to Red Hat Linux 9. It's over 900 pages, and includes the "Publisher's Edition" of RH9 on 2 CD's. It is written in a style which should accomodate Linux newcomers and more experienced users alike. There are a LOT of examples, code snippets, and screenshots throughout the book. In fact sometimes the abundance of these tend to make the material a little long to wade through. Experts should have no trouble skipping over the sections they don't need though.
The book starts out with in an introduction to Linux, and has a good chapter on preparing to install, including hardware checklists. This is followed by a very detailed step by step explanation of installing Red Hat, both locally and via network. A nice part of this is a troubleshooting chapter for solving installation problems. Part Two explains the basics of using the command line, how filesystems work in Linux, and using the shell for various tasks.
Part Three includes chapters for administering users and groups on your new system, and how the RPM software package management process works. Other chapters in this part explain the bootup process and how to configure it, various ways to perform system backups, and other common adminstration tasks such as cron jobs and logs. Especially useful should be Chapter 12 which explains how to update/compile your own kernel. There are very good examples of the myriad kernel options, mostly by using the xconfig utility.
The next several chapters go over how to configure and use the XWindows display system, including good examples from the XF86Config file. This is followed by detailed explanations of configuring and using the Gnome and KDE desktop environments. The KDE discussion is very good, considering Red Hat is more known for it's use of Gnome as the default desktop. Chapter 18 introduces many of the more commonly used graphical applications in Linux, such as OpenOffice, Gnome Office, and the KOffice suite. Chapter 19 should be very handy for Linux/RH new users, as it outlines the Red Hat graphical configuration utilities which allow customization of the desktop look-and-feel and other system preferences.
Chapters 20-22 cover basic Linux networking. The first part of this section gives a very understandable primer on TCP/IP and network terminology. This is followed up by excellent discussions on how to setup and manage networking on your Linux computer, including security recommendations and firewall/masquerading methods. Once you've got your network running safely, there are additional chapters which cover topics such as remote access and xinetd services, and various server applications installation and operation. These include DNS, DHCP, CUPS printing operations, FTP servers (and clients), NFS and NIS, and mail servers (sendmail). Some of these services are probably more than most home users would need, and the sendmail operation in particular is a little difficult to understand.
Chapter 29 (using Samba) will probably be a great help for people desiring to integrate a Linux system with existing Windows computers on a network. It offers an excellent tutorial on how to share files and resources across the LAN, and includes an explanation of the SWAT configuration utility which greatly simplifies initial setup for newcomers. The final chapter in the book explains how to install and setup a basic webserver using the Apache sofware. The Appendix of the book is a relatively short section called the Linux Command Reference. There is some handy information in this, although it seems to be organized somewhat haphazardly. The book's Index seems to be very complete.
Overall I found this book to be a very useful reference tool. It is basic enough for most beginners to get all the help they need, and has a good amount of usable knowledge for more advanced Linux users. One thing I have realized is that much of the information here is not necessarily RedHat-specific, so can be helpful to users of other Linux distributions as well. I would highly recommend this as a valuable addition to your bookshelf.

This book has good intentions, but...

I have been a Solaris system admin for some time, so I understand a bit about this subject. However, when going through this book word by word, I have found mistakes that make it almost impossible for the average user to learn. Fortunately for me, I can look and say, hey, this isn't right and figure out what figure he should be referencing; figure out that his IP address was added incorrectly, figure out what the heck he is REALLY talking about. Whoever proofread this book should be fired! IE. page 375, Table 13.3 stop (table says this command STARTS a service)! Too many mistakes to mention individually. Some of it is well written, but certainly not much of it for my mind.

Good Book, can still be improved

The book is pretty comprehensive and generous with examples. It serves well as a guided instruction on those who are just starting with linux. This is book is also a good refernce material, however, there are certain topics I was hoping would be included, like OpenLDAP, mySQL, TACACS+ and how these tools integrate with Linux for it to become more rounded.
Overall, Mastering RH9 is still book worth having on our shelves.

I find it difficult to really slam this book but I cannot recommend it either. The book looks good with nice big pages, glossy cover, color charts. It is also well written and gets its points across well. The information is very good, presented well and important but it is just too remedial. There is not an original thought in this book. If you are anything other that a rank novice there is little to be gained here. The information here is important stuff to know but anyone who has ever traded generally understands about support, resistance, breakouts, and trends. Using them across multiple timeframes is also a very basic concept.

If you know nothing at all about the basics of trading this book is very good and I would recommend to those readers. But if you have any experience at all with a basic knowledge of remedial technical analysis there is nothing to be gained here.

you have to be kidding

I purchased this book based on a mention in "One Good Trade" (which happens to be an excellent book). I can only surmise that "Bella" (author of One good trade") is friends with this author. The book costs 82 bucks and at least 90% of it is so basic that you could read it online for free-I rarely feel ripped off but this book is a ripoff and reading the simplistic comments really ticked me off-for ex: "Moving averages are the most commonly found technical indicator on charts" and this brilliant insight "Once broken, resistance tends to act as support" If this is news to you, get the book. He also copies (but also credits to be fair) Weinstein's 4 stages of trend cycles. It's almost as if we are reading a beginners notes as he reads through the basics of technical analysis-all of it is true, but what is this author adding? Answer??! - use lower timeframes to better time your entry into higher timeframe trends. There, now send ME $82 for that idea and read the section on technical analysis for free on wikipeadia and investopedia.

Using technical analysis techniques to understand market dynamics and structure

I decided to buy this book based on favourable recommendations I read elsewhere and because I'm in the process of educating myself about various aspects of trading.

In this book, Brian Shannon, a trader with many years of experience explains probably more clearly than in any other book I've read, why technical analysis works, and how to do use it to develop understanding and insight into markets, and ultimately an edge in trading. For reference, Brian has been involved in markets since 1991, has worked as a broker, owned a day-trading firm, managed a hedge fund, ran a proprietary trading desk (where he was also the most profitable trader of that firm) and have taught thousands of traders world-wide with his involvement with MarketWise, a training firm.

Perhaps the first thing to say is that this book is not a canned "system" that you simply learn and use, although the material covered has a bias towards trend following systems and the material obviously will help in building a trend following system of your own if that's your goal. I would opine that this book should be essential reading for anyone who have an interest in trading the markets as a trend follower, particularly if you're a novice.

The primary topics covered are the 4 stages that stocks go through, namely accumulation, markup, distribution and finally decline (as popularized by Stan Weinstein) and how and why this happens and how this is evident from a price chart, support and resistance and how to properly identify and use them (including various related topics like why support turns into resistance and vice versa and the psychology of participants in the markets), trends and how to identify and use them to identify the highest probability trades including stop loss levels, profit targets and consequently risk/reward ratios, volume and how to properly use it, moving averages and how to properly use them (hint: not as timing indicators for entry but rather as "a visual reference point to which price can be compared in order to identify trends and market structure."), the role of time, how and when to buy or sell short, news and fundamentals and how this should influence your risk/reward rules, short squeezes - what they are and how they happen, a chapter on risk management and strategies, a chapter of collected quotes, rules and general trader wisdom to ponder and internalize, and finally a chapter on "putting it all together" where Brian explains how he uses all these elements in his own daily and weekly trading regime. Regarding the topic of risk, I feel I should add that the topic of risk management is actually weaved throughout the entire book, even if there's a dedicated chapter on it. As Brian says in the introduction, "The number one job of a trader is that of risk manager." Very true and essential to understand/internatlize if you want to make a success of trading.

The book itself is a large (A4) hardback book printed in colour, comprising 184 pages. The print is easy to read and well spaced, making it easy to underline and make notes in the borders. I bought my copy through a third party seller (booktrader88) who gave excellent service and packed the book very well using multiple bubble wrap packages, delivered via DHL.

Really a book on service societies and "mutual" seduction.

This small book based on the authors Ph.D is a small gem. It off course tell the story about the male hosts catering in dreams for their female audience, but that is in my opinion just a very small part of what the book is about. The book is way more an empirical "grounded" discussion of modern service and service societies. The book draws on a significant amount of literature inside critical Anthropology and theory, without ever becoming difficult to read. As an ethnographic study I hope it will be read inside my own field of organizational behavior and theory, and in particular service management. Where it can be as an important book as "the managed heart"

My only critical comment is, that a few places the analysis and explanations tilt towards, what I call an asymmetrical and "feminist privilege" performance analysis. where the wording and dynamics highlighted makes the female patrons "victims of exploitation" - despite the fact using the same criteria of analysis would make the male host - the exploited part. That said the book always comeback to its fundamental line of analyzing the performed lies, feelings and embodyment in the mutual seductive process, which makes it such an important book for our understanding of all services.
