Intriguing book, but I will never believe Web stats again

I had reviewed one of Eighs earlier books on making Tofu, and I got an email for this one when it came out for free on Amazon.

So what does Tofu have to do with "bots?" In this case, the clarity of instruction and writing. The author stated his goal was "to make you feel like you could do it." He achieved his goal in my case. His careful, clear and detailed instructions were everything a non tech person wants to know.

While the book is focused on those doing the marketing, I was intrigued from the point of view of the one being marketed to, particularly as a top reviewer at Amazon. Ah, so THAT is how they scrape my info! Hmmm, could this author be using this tool, or that tool? Wait, you can do that?

He remains on the ethical side and never suggests you try these ideas in inappropriate ways. Still, he made me aware of many ways the tools could be misused.

IF you are reading his book to get some ideas for promoting yours to Amazon Reviewers, I have a tip concerning those emails. Statistically speaking, the higher up on the rankings an individual is, the more requests they get to review stuff. I personally get about three requests per day to read someone's book. Most are genres I would never read or review.

If you use your "good powers" to find readers using his technique, I suggest you do any of the following:

Find books similar to yours and scrape information on reviewers of those books
Be as personal as you can (even if it is a macro) in contacting reviewers.
NEVER EVER send an email out with multiple addresses. Very bad netiquette. I either blast the sender, or toss it in the trash. So do my friends.

Data scraping for fun and profit

According to the author, the book is intended to describe the use of tools that can be used in your web marketing, particularly for marketing Amazon Kindle books. He calls the Amazon marketplace the "Amazon Jungle" - a place that's very mysterious, dangerous, and difficult to survive.

The book includes several tools for automating many processes using high tech tools. The first of these, "Live HTTP Headers," is a web conversation interceptor, a free Firefox add-on. That sounds complicated, but it's just a tool to observe your browser's "conversation" with a web server.

The next tool is another Firefox add-on called "iMacro" that lets you record, save, and playback macros that you create. (Didn't the early versions of Windows include a macro recorder?) This can be used to automate many tasks. Another automated marketing tool is "uBot," which may enable your scripts to sneak past CAPTCHA gatekeepers.

"Jingling" software may be the most powerful bot traffic generator for increasing page counts at sites such as eBay and YouTube. It's in Chinese, but the book walks you through using it.

Two comments about the book:
1. It's fairly technical, but the author explains every step with illustrations and commentary.
2. There are ethical issues involved (such as sending bots to vote hundreds of times for your book or photograph in a competition), but to his credit, the author acknowledges this and discusses the issues.

It's a very informative book with a boatload of information for anyone interested in automating some computer tasks.

Wow!!

This is solid reading! Not like some of the fluff that is passed off as information.

I had to read the book twice, as I worked through the examples that Marcus gives.

Among other things the author teaches how to use macros. My productivity will benefit from learning how to use macros to perform the many repetitious tasks I have to do on my computer.

In this case, the racy looking picture is about all that is excitable about this title.
The plot is wafer thin, the relationship distant, and fetishism unconvincing. Don't even feel that the 2nd volume of this will compensate or complete or excite.
I urge readers of this genre, including the author of this dismal title to check out Sara Desmaris' "A change in our marriage", "The sissy pilot", or "The photoshoot" for a better return on investment. Or just scour the net for better quality, free stories.

This is part two: Was a nice story, however there were a few words used in the wrong context or misspelled. Could have put both books together in my opinion for same price. Just seemed as if more effort could have been put into the story.

About the Author

Eliot Smith is Chancellor’s Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington. His research interests range widely, including person perception, prejudice and intergroup relations, political and social opinions, and situated and embodied cognition. He has published more than 150 scientific articles and chapters on these and other topics, and his work has been supported by research grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Science Foundation. Professor Smith earned his B.A. and Ph.D. at Harvard University, and before moving to Bloomington held positions at the University of California, Riverside and at Purdue University. Besides this textbook, he has authored Beliefs about Inequality (with James Kluegel) as well as editing Beyond Prejudice: Differentiated Reactions to Social Groups (with Diane Mackie). Among his professional honors are the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations award in 1998, the Thomas M. Ostrom Award for contributions to social cognition in 2004, the Society of Social and Personality Psychology’s Theoretical Innovation Prize in 2005, and the International Social Cognition Network’s award for the best paper in 2009. He has been chair of a grant review committee at the National Institute of Mental Health, Editor of Personality and Social Psychology Review, and is currently Editor of Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Attitudes and Social Cognition. These positions have given him tremendous appreciation for the best work in every area of social psychology. Professor Smith is married to Pamela Grenfell Smith, a poet and storyteller. They take great joy in their grown-up children, who share their passions for world music, science fiction, and good cooking, but the big deal for them is their astonishingly accomplished grandchildren, Griffin James Hassett and Iona Beatrice Hassett.

Diane Mackie is Professor and Chair of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she has been honored with a Distinguished Teaching Award and listed as one of "Ten Terrific Teachers" by UCSB students. Professor Mackie grew up in New Zealand, received her B.A. and M.A. at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and then worked as a researcher at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Princeton University in 1984. These opportunities to become steeped in both European and North American traditions of social psychology are reflected in her interests in integrating different perspectives and approaches both in her research and in this textbook. The author of more than 100 articles, chapters, and books on persuasion, social influence, group interaction, and intergroup relations, Professor Mackie is also co-editor of Affect, Cognition, and Stereotyping: Interactive Processes in Group Perception (with David Hamilton) as well as Beyond Prejudice: Differentiated Reactions to Social Groups (with Eliot Smith). Reflecting her broad interests, Professor Mackie has served as Associate Editor for Personality and Social Psychology Review, Group Processes and Intergroup Relations, and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, as well as on the editorial boards of almost all major social psychological journals. Both the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health have funded her research. Professor Mackie counts among her honors fellow status in the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. However by far her greatest (and busiest) honor is being Mom to college freshman Alex and high school freshman Nico, the two coolest kids on the planet.

Heather Claypool is Professor of Psychology at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Her research interests focus on how motivation, emotion, and mood influence and are influenced by cognitive processes. Specific topics of study have examined how processing ease (or fluency) shapes social perceptions and behaviors; how feelings of positivity trigger feelings of familiarity; and how feelings of belongingness and a lack of belongingness shape emotions, self-esteem, social perceptions, and social information processing. She has published more than 30 scientific articles and chapters on these and other topics, and her work has been supported by research grants from the National Science Foundation. Professor Claypool earned her Ph.D. at Purdue University in 2002 (where Eliot Smith served as one of her mentors), and then worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara (with Diane Mackie). In 2003, she took a position at Miami University in Oxford, OH, where she continues on the faculty today. She has been an Associate Editor for Basic and Applied Social Psychology, is currently an Associate Editor at Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and serves on the editorial boards of several other journals. She has also served as a panelist for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Professor Claypool is married to Eric Core, an engineer, and they share a love for travel, tennis, good food, and their two adorable cats, Abby and Murphy.
