How much fun is it to write a character such as Morgan and see him grow with each book?

I can't tell you how much I enjoy writing Alex Morgan and creating his reality for him. Of course, I suspect he may have other views on that. When I started the series with�Defender, my principal objective was to set the scene and make it absolutely clear to everyone that Alex Morgan was an action hero. I deliberately threw him into the action from the very beginning of the book to leave no doubt what Morgan and INTREPID were all about. I consider Defender as the initial handshake. The introduction to readers that says 'Hi, good to meet you. I'm Alex Morgan'. From that point on, if people are interested in each other, they take the time and make the effort to get to know each other. So, since then, I've begun to delve more into his character and background, exploring what it is that makes him tick and pisses him off. Ultimately, I'm letting readers get to know more about him with each book. I'm enjoying that.

Your books comprise action, adventure, thrills, and fierce combat. What draws you to telling these sorts of stories?�
�
I grew up reading the stories of Maclean, Forsyth, Higgins, Cussler... the list goes on. As a young guy, their stories would transport me to places I'd never seen and experiences I'd never dream of having. So, in the days before you could race off to the video store to hire your favourite movie or find new favourites, it was all about books! I devoured action and adventure books as a kid and back then I'd have to find the classics in second hand stores because they hadn't been re-released or anything like that. As a result, all of the paperbacks I have from those days are all very old (even older than me!) and you can smell the decades in them. It was reading those books that sent me off in search of my own adventures and, eventually, to writing my own books.

The 'Intrepid girl' seems to be a staple in the series now, can we expect more of the same in future installments? These girls seem to have a positive influence on Morgan.
�
Yeah, I think it's important in these stories to keep Morgan's personal life as real as possible. Despite the fact that he would love to find the right girl and settle down, there is no chance that he will be able to do that while he is an Intrepid agent. It's just not going to happen for him. So, he meets people just as any of us do through the normal course of his life. In his life that usually means while he's on a mission. The important thing for me is that all of the principal women in the stories are intelligent, strong and self-assured. They challenge Morgan and it's that challenge that draws him to them. I don't want these characters to ever be seen as window dressing. They're not. They are important to him and, as you've noted, they have a very positive influence on him and his personal development. I'm not sure I'd describe my intentions for these relationships to be more of the same. I want to explore more about Morgan and, as he develops and learns to understand himself more, then his interactions and relationships need to reflect that journey. I don't even know where that will take us yet.

What's next for Alex Morgan and the Intrepid series?
�
I've reached a really exciting point in the life of the series. All I'll say at this point is that [Helldiver] tackles a number of major issues that are confronting us all right now.� Other than that, I am absolutely focused on exploring every avenue to expand my readership and the great thing about publishing these days is that you don't have to feel limited or constrained in that regard. If you're willing to be your own champion and captain your own ship then the world is your oyster.

I chose the motto of the Celts -�'To the brave belong all things'�as the maxim for Intrepid, and there's good reason for that. When I set out upon this journey I had a very clear vision for Alex Morgan and Intrepid. I set clear objectives for myself and the series and I'm absolutely committed to achieving that mission.

About the Author
After self-publishing in 2010, Allen caught the eye of Pan Macmillan's experimental digital publishing arm, Momentum, and soon became one of their best-selling authors.

Alex Morgan is at it again in this latest book by Chris Allen. As readers of the previous books realize, Alex is more than a soldier and spy for Intrepid - the Black Ops Division of Europol. Due to his previous experiences, he is the consummate warrior. In this novel, Alex starts out on board the Super Yacht Gemini south of Oahu. He is currently employed by a man named Hedeon Zolner aka Helldiver. His boss's name is derived from the fact he loves to explore the old helldiver planes beneath the seas. Well, as Alex soon discovers there is a lot more to HD (Helldiver) than meets his eye.
During the pages of this book, the reader will be led on a journey from Oahu to the Ukraine, Singapore, London, Moscow and the Cote d'Azur just to name a few of the locations. As one might expect, Alex has several missions and all of them are dangerous. Toss in the new Cold War, the intrigue of commercial airline disappearances, a destabilization operation with the West and the Islamic State for some extra plot material. And, Alex is also conflicted between a couple of women!!
Several things caught my attention while reading this book that I really appreciated. The characters include several women in high places and that is exceptional. Next for me. from the attack of the tiger sharks near the beginning, I knew this one would be exciting. The Cessna and the Land Rover scene near the end made my blood pressure rise and shortly thereafter I had to take an aspirin~!! Absolutely exhilarating in those final pages. One thing I had not heard for many years which made me smile... tear him a new one!. Memories of my time in the USN.
All in all, a most exciting book to read with excellent character development, a plot that flows smoothly and an outstanding novel.
Most highly recommended and for multiple reasons. Truly glad to meet Alex and his teammates and will read on when the next one is available.

Alex Morgan is back in the 4th book in the Intrepid series and he's got his mojo back. Just in time as the black ops Intrepid division is in real trouble and Morgan and Elizabeth Reigns are the only agents who can sort out the mess.
The Intrepid books are an absolute gem of a thriller series from Australian author (and ex-paratrooper) Chris Allen. Getting the military and action aspects spot on is one highlight, but where Allen really excels is in getting nuance and emotion into an all action type hero, equally capable of hand to hand combat or ruthless gun-play in the event that it's required.
In HELLDIVER the plot is nicely twisty with some just evil as well some misguided baddies. There are harks back to the bad old days of the Soviet Union and the KGB, linked forward to the world of current day Russian oligarch's. There's some gloriously over the top luxury locations with huge yachts, and huge houses, just as you'd expect in the best of spy thriller books and novels.
At the heart of it all though is Alex Morgan. He of the sometimes sore feet, and the questioning of his commitment, along with a longing for love and fierce loyalty that just about throws him when old connections resurface in this book. He's ably supported by a surrounding cast of returning, and sometimes new characters. Elizabeth Reigns is back again in HELLDIVER, albeit a little later in the action, but as always she's up to the same level of resolve and commitment as Morgan ever is. As you'd expect in this style of book, there's a lot of concentration on the central protagonist, but not, in a way that dismisses or caricatures those surrounding him. His female characters in particular are in there for their abilities, and their contribution - not as eye candy or merely decorative.
The strength of this series really is the all-roundedness of it. They are spy / action / hero thrillers with one bloke to save the world against big, believable and chilling threats. Our hero is brave, strong, true, loyal and good. He's also ruthless and vulnerable, and, you'd imagine, likely to groan just a little as he rises from his chair, dusts himself down, shakes out the back and strengthens the resolve to head out, yet again, and save the world.

Helldiver? Hell yes. Intelligent intel and action - the best yet from Chris Allen's INTREPID.

One of the things I love most about Chris Allen's writing is this; he isn't content to stay in one gear, with a main character and peripherals who remain static, content with a shoot-em up status quo. It would be easy for Alex Morgan and the rest of the INTREPID team to have the same adventures in each new book, but Allen takes them further each time, investigating uncomfortable social topics whilst delivering bang-on Bond worthy thrills, spills, and spook-filled travails. In HELLDIVER, possibly his tightest plotted effort yet, Morgan and his now familiar offsider Elizabeth Reigns are thrown into the immense riches and pleasure state of the oligarchs, Russia's new world order. Wielding more power than Rasputin and Stalin combined, Morgan learns that his new enemies 'live by the sword', and he quickly sees "that the old ways were never really old at all: they were a constantly evolving beast that never aged, never weakened, never relented". Fighting time, internal enemies and exterior brute force, Morgan has to call on all his wit, tenacity and warrior skills to survive - and save those he cares for.
I am a massive Len Deighton fan, and to me, there is quite a bit of Deighton's wry deftness in Allen's writing. Much like Deighton and other champions of the classic spy thriller, such as le Carr� and Ludlum, Allen's ability to connect with his audience comes not only from the action scenes but from the 'inbetweeners' - the subtle throwaway lines. Watch out for the last few pages, because if, like me, you are a bit of a war geek, you will also be off to Vegas at the mention of Jane's (this does not impact on the plot, and will make sense. Promise). The verdict of Alex Morgan's latest outing? Majorly good derring-do, from a man who has done both the derring AND the do - and it shows. Helldiver? Hell yes.
