About the Author

Peter A Pilgrim

Peter A. Pilgrim is the 91st Oracle Java Champion, an independent contractor, a professional software developer and designer. Peter is an honors degree graduate of London South Bank University in 1990. He had already secured a Master's degree course for September 1991, but then instead elected to live and work in Germany for a few years in order to beat off the then, economic recession. He spent productive years at a joint-venture company developing spectroscopic scientific software in Fortran 77, C, Solaris, and X Windows.

After four years abroad Peter returned to London and continued his career in the industry with more C, C++, and UNIX development. He then leapt at a chance to get into investment banking with Deutsche Bank in 1998. It was at Deutsche Bank a week after joining them that Peter discovered Java was the next best thing since sliced bread, when a colleague dropped out of a programming Java training course.

As the substitute person, Peter realized this peculiar Java language and platform was the future and the answer. Peter applied his studies to his day job and learnt Java applets, then Java Swing and switched over to the server side with Java Servlets with web applications involving the Struts framework.

In 2004, Peter created the JAVAWUG user group in London for the burgeoning development community who were interested in web development on the Java EE. What started as the Struts Networking Users Group in London quickly expanded to lot of other areas. The JAVAWUG ran for six years until 2010. He built a reputation for travelling to Java technology conferences in the US and Europe and being heavily involved in the wider community. He spoke at several developer conferences including QCon London, ACCU, Devoxx, Devoxx UK, and JavaOne. In 2007, Peter was elected to the Sun Microsystems' Java Champions program. Today, Peter A. Pilgrim is a well-known specialist in Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) technology, focused on the server-side and the implementation of electronic commerce. Peter has built professional Java EE applications for Blue-chip companies and top-tier investment and retail banks including Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays, UBS, Credit Suisse, Royal Bank of Scotland, and LBi. He is also a fan of Agile practices and Test Driven Development. Peter, currently, lives in South London with his long-term partner Terry, who is a Scottish Diva, business communication coach, and a singer—her voice is phenomenal.

Very good reference book, not for beginners

Disclaimer: I got a free copy of the book by Packt.
First, I really disliked the book because it does no cover JSF, which I found not excusable. I also found it very hard to read, as a beginner to intermediate skilled developer. The style is very technical and I felt that the author did not make a great effort to ease the comprehension.

For this reason, for a couple of months I stayed with my copy of Antonio Goncalves' Introduction to JavaEE 7 (http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Java-EE-Antonio-Goncalves/dp/143024626X).

But... after a while I needed a more thorough explanation of transactions, a better view on how chained Singleton initialization works (with the @Dependent annotation), and other specific problems when managing EJBs. The book by Pilgrim provides all that, it is indeed a reference book.

So I give 5 stars for this book as a reference (not for beginners), minus one star because JSF is not covered.

COMPREHENSIVE UP-TO-DATE Java EE 7 GUIDE BOOK

Being defined as a developer handbook, this book goes beyond its definition. It contains detailed description for each included technology. Each topic is provided with code examples, which are discussed in details. Many discussed topics are appropriately illustrated by schemes, tables and diagrams.
The book language is clear and precise. Author managed to explain advanced topics easily, in a few relevant words. Such features as cross references, recalling of software engineering definitions, highlighting of new and important words, tip and warning sections add value to the book objective, which is to help people in working with Java EE technologies.
Also, the book is written to be interesting and easy for reading. I like these smart quotes in the beginning of each chapter and a historical review for each of discussed technologies.
Now test driven development is considered as a very advantageous approach for each project, and this methodology is used through the book. Author shows how to implement functional and integration tests for each of described technologies in easy and effective way.
Usage of Gradle for building the book examples might be a challenge, as it is not so widely used as Ant or Maven. But, from other hand, it is a good chance to master this advanced build technology.
It seems a bit confusing that the "Advanced Topics in Persistence" chapter is not placed together with other chapters related to persistence, and some important persistence topics are placed in the appendix.
In general, I think that this book can be a really useful resource for all developers, who are interested in studying and using Java EE platform, especially the server-side technologies. Even better is that such a comprehensive guide book appeared only few months after the Java EE 7 release date.

Great coverage, terrible editing

The topic coverage is great. They selected the parts of EE that you are most likely to use (CDI, EJB, JPA, WebSockets, Servlets, JAX-RS, JMS, and Bean Validation) and did a deep dive into those topics as opposed to the shallow exploration most other books have. There is deep coverage of CDI and JMS, so-so coverage of EJBs, and decent coverage of the other topics, but waaaay too much coverage on JPA (nearly 200 pages).

The difficulty level is hard to assess as I knew much of the content before hand and did not read the JPA sections, but the areas I did not know well were explained in depth and I felt I understood them well enough to use them in practice. Some code samples are vague and someone who doesn't have much experience with Java and third-party libraries may find it pretty challenging to understand what they are doing much of the time.

As usual with PackPub, the editing is sloppy sloppy sloppy. This book was edited so poorly I had to go back to my account on their website to make sure I didn't review a pre-release book. There are sections that make no sense. One section indicates valid CDI injections can be arrays or primitive types and the next section indicates you can't use either.

I would rate the content I was interested in at 5 stars, but I had to remove stars for charging a high price for such a poorly edited book and wasting a third of it on JPA. If you can get it for $5 at a PacktPub sale like I did, I would recommend it completely.

Dark Room for the 21st Century

This book is an excellent and concise manual on how to use the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying to be able to gain perception of the clear light.

The reason for this book is NOT to give instant enlightenment. The purpose of this book is to practice the art of correct and conscious dying by using your mind to properly navigate the bardo.

Traditionally in Tibet this book would be used in 2 instances. The first is during a retreat known as dark room where the monks and nuns literally go into complete light isolation for a period of 49 days. During the initial 2 weeks the brain chemistry is radically altered to produce endogenous entheogens believed to be DMT. This way the bardo thodol can be experienced in holographic 3D mind projections or hallucinations. The only other time the bardo thodol is used is to read it to a person whom is actually dying to utilize the time of death as an opportunity to reach enlightenment through the perception of the clear light.

Psychedelics and dark room retreats are used in the same way a pilot would use a jet simulator. You can practice dying over and over again until you are able to quickly and easily perceive the clear light upon death (ego loss) and attain nirvana. In this instance ones mindstream will instantly be transferred into the realm of pure light or the 4th dimension.

This book helps one to experience the state of samadhi or rigpa which is the state of non-dual consciousness. The experience of rigpa is necessary to the practice of the inner tantras like dzogchen.

Even though this book mentions LSD, I suggest that we should only stick with the time tested entheogens used through out history like ayahuasca, iboga, peyote, san pedro etc....

This book is for those who want to use entheogens in a way to learn to attain liberation upon death also known as mahasamadhi or powa. Reading the passages from this book during spirit walking on the entheogen is an excellent way this book is to be used to attain liberation through listening.

This book helps us to gain confidence during a usually frightening and uncertain time in our lives. We are all going to die one day and this book teaches us how to go about doing it right and what to expect.

This book was clearly written by someone who wanted to show you how smart they are, not teach you. The chapters include pages of redundant information, mixed in with good information that is written in such a confusing way it is nearly impossible to understand. The author forgot he was supposed to be teaching the material, not showing off his convoluted method of communication and knowledge of the english language. If your teacher assigned you this book, get the study guide and find a good youtube channel to help you. The problems on the Wiley homework are not even covered in the book. Get ready for a frustrating class.

Just what you would expect an accounting book to be.....

Love the loose leaf style of this book. It makes it so much easier to work with than the bound text. You can just take the chapters with you that your are currently studying and leave the rest at home for reference later. Only warning I can give (and it has nothing to do with the seller, they were great to work with) is that the self tests on the publisher's website contain errors. Some of them do not have a correct answer to the question (they are true/false and multiple choice). A couple of them had a correct answer to choose from, but when the test was corrected on-line you were marked as incorrect, but the answer that they listed was the answer that you had indicated. Good Luck with your accounting classes.

Clear as mud. The layout would send a child into a seizure, multiple sections on every page circled or shaded in with a different background color which makes it legitimately hard to read. The content appears fine but if it takes me twice as long to read this as it does any of my other textbooks, which cover more advanced concepts, it doesn't really matter.

Waste of Money

This solutions guide has way too many errors to be beneficial. My professor has actually started a special page on his website to post the numerous errors in this study guide as he finds them. Too expensive to have so many errors. It is as if they had high school students check the accuracy of the problems. With so many errors throughout the book you cannot trust any of them are really guiding you in the right direction, so the book is useless.

However, that the book may present sound ideals to the student, and in order also serve the mathematician, both for purposes of reference and as a basis for further developments, the proofs have been given by rigorous methods. This has led, at a number of points, to results either not found elsewhere, or not readily accessible. Thus, Chapter IV contains a proof for the general regular region of the divergence theorem (Gauss', or Green's theorem) on the reduction of volume to surface integrals. The treatment of the fundamental existence theorems in Chapter XI by means of integral equations meets squarely the difficulties incident to �the discontinuity of the kernel, and the same chapter gives an account of the most recent developments with respect to the Dirichlet problem.

THE book on classical potential theory

There are few books left in print on this captivating subject from theoretical mechanics. Kellogg's presentation is clear and mathematically formal. This is an excellent reprint from Dover.
Now, if Dover would only bring back into print MacMillan's "The Theory of the Potential" and maybe try to reprint Sternberg & Smith's U. of Toronto Press published (and out of print) "The Theory of the Potential and Spherical Harmonics", they would have themselves a trilogy to corner the science book market for the classical treatment of potential theory.
Kellogg stands fairly well on its own, but the other two books just mentioned fill-in Kellogg's gaps.

A beautiful presentation which I much enjoyed in grad school. Now I need to return to the subject, but I can't find it in my lib. So I'm ordering another copy and looking forward to reading it again!

Aaron Woland , CCIE No. 20113, is a Senior Secure Access Engineer at Cisco Systems and works with Cisco’s largest customers all over the world. His primary job responsibilities include secure access and ISE deployments, solution enhancements, futures, and escalations. Aaron joined Cisco in 2005 and is currently a member of numerous security advisory boards. Prior to joining Cisco, he spent 12 years as a consultant and technical trainer. His areas of expertise include network and host security architecture and implementation, regulatory compliance, and routing and switching. Aaron is the author of many white papers and design guides, including the TrustSec 2.0 Design and Implementation Guide and the NAC Layer 3 OOB Using VRFs for Traffic Isolation design guide. He is also a distinguished speaker at Cisco Live for topics related to identity and is a security columnist for Network World , where he blogs on all things related to identity. Additional certifications include CCSP, CCNP, CCDP, Certified Ethical Hacker, MCSE, and many other industry certifications.

Demystifying ISE

If you have ever tried to deploy Cisco Identity Services Engine you know and understand there are a lot of components that can play into the mix which will complicate things. Getting devices on the network safely, securely, and easily is hard to do. ISE allows you to meet those goals, but the setup and maintaining of ISE are not straight forward. If you have ever heard Aaron Woland speak at Cisco Live or other events you can feel his passion for helping others deploy ISE. In this book Aaron brings that passion and energy by creating the manual that should be shipped with every copy of ISE sold. The first couple of chapters explain the business need/desire for ISE but from then on it's all hands on technical configuration. If you are deploying currently or thinking of deploying ISE 1.2 you need to pick up this book. If you are upgrading from an existing ISE 1.1 you really need to pick up this book as best practices have changed from 1.1 to 1.2.

Well organized and informative

I picked up this volume at a Security User Group meeting, partly attracted by BYOD in the title. But what I really ended up learning about is the Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE). And while BYOD is a huge current trend, supporting secure BYOD access is only a portion of the overall ISE architecture and capabilities.
I am impressed by how well the book organized and quite interesting to read, especially for volume that’s basically describing a product. After a historical overview and a refresher on network access control in Section I, followed by an overview of the major components, deployment options, and various ISE specs in Section II, authors pull no punches in Section III that for an ISE deployment to be successful and effective, defining the Network Access Security Policy and getting senior-level sponsorship for ISE deployment is a must. And that’s hard work. Checklists provided in that section are helpful. Another great advice from the authors: phased deployment, beginning with the monitor mode that allows for auditing of what would fail without initially denying access.
Section IV, the largest out of seven comprising this work, has many insightful chapters on ISE configuration, but I found portions of it very hard to get through. Some of the ISE screenshots (not all) literally require a magnifying glass to read, and that’s for a 20/20 vision. Try looking at figures 9-24, 11-2, or 14-18, for example, and see what you can decipher. But that’s a relatively small price to pay in the overall context of a highly instructive security publication, and that not just in terms of the ISE product itself but of security principles as well. Last three sections on Best Practices, Advanced Features, and Troubleshooting, along with more good stuff in the Appendices wrap up this informative volume. Hence, even with a bit of annoyance for some unreadable screenshots, I am still giving it the highest rating.
