Awesome reading book

I bought this book for my 6 year old daughter who is in the first grade. She works very independently using this book. The instrustions are kids friendly, so they don't need to much help from us parents. This book reinforces some of the stuff your child already knows and builds on them , while pushing your child forward in the right direction. My daughter has learn so much from using this book. I just love love this book because it does what it supposed to do which is help my child read.

This book consists of these exercises: Short vowels, long vowels ,Consonant Combinations, Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension. Your child will be matching pictures to the correct words, completing rhyming phrases, connecting words to the correct picture, writing words with the same ending and circling words that matches the picture. The reading consist of several short passages, which your child will read and then answer several questions about what they just read. Overall this is a great book for kids to work on their own and then use the answer sheet to the back of the book to correct their own mistakes. I highly recommend this book to home schoolers or to reinforced what child is learning in school.

My daughter has progressed very well using this as part of her home-school curriculum. We are very glad that Kumon has these workbooks available for us to use. They are a great resource for us. We also use Kumon Word Problems and Geometry & Measurement for math and recommend it as well.

Excellent book for 5 year old learning to read

Excellent book for 5 year old learning to read. My daughter started to read some 3 letter words within 2 days of starting this book. This book gives parents motivation to teach reading . I am glad for this purchase.

Great read!! I have read both books they are a clean story with lots of humor,heartbreak and love. A meddling father and his housekeeper (which I think there should be a story too) can't wait to read about the next bride for Daniel.

Jeremiah Blake had trouble around ladies. He just turned into a man who bumbled his words, dropped things, tripped, and other things that just made him unpopular with the gals. He liked the idea of a mail-order bride after his brother was blessed with Clementine. And when a woman arrived on the train, he assumed she was his bride. Only she wasn't.

Rosamund Gifford had a tough life. Her parents died and she left England to spend seven years as a servant in America. She has finally gained her freedom and took on a job as a maid. The Blake family was a perfect fit for her. She just had to hold her heart closely around Jeremiah. There was a better woman for him in his future, not her.

Jeb Blake is not doing well health-wise and he's not sure if he'll recover. His one wish is to see his three sons married before he is taken from this earth. Whether they want a bride or not, Jeb and his long time housekeeper, Katherine, are going to find them each one.

I knew I would love Jeremiah after I met him in book one, The Sweetest Mail-Order Bride. This story grabbed me from the beginning and pulled me in. I love the mail-order bride books. These women took chances in hopes of a better life and traveled to new places with their hopes. Never knowing what awaited them at the end of the tracks. Watch for the third book in this series, Secondhand Bride.

Triumph Over The Past

I enjoyed this second installment in this series. It's a short & sweet romance which I read quickly. I have really liked the Blake family so far. In this book Rosamund Gifford lives back East and works as an indentured servant. She's treated terribly by her "employer". Finally she fulfills her "contract" and can leave. Thankfully, the Blake family puts an ad in a paper and she sees it and applies for a job as a maid for them in the Montana Territory. Through all of this, I kept thinking of how hard times were in those days for some people. When Rosamund arrives in Sweet Creek, she is so humble and grateful for every little kindness showed to her after the life she has had to live. It made me grateful for all I have! This wasn't your typical Mail-Order Bride story because Rosamund wasn't supposed to be a bride but Jeremiah, one of the Blake's sons, falls for her. Although Rosamund tries to resist him because she's "just a maid" and doesn't want to jeopardize her place in the household, she can't help falling for Jeremiah either! This was truly a story of triumph over your past and looking forward to your future. I enjoyed the book very much.

One of a kind

There are very few books written that covers as many important topics in behavioral research methods as this one. Earlier editions were outstanding and the fourth edition is exceptional. The new material in the 4th Edition is helpful to today's researcher. Both researcher and student doing research should have this book. The examples are extremely useful in facilitating the understanding of research methods and the analysis of data.

Lee gives a six star performance by improving on what was already a five star performance in the third edition before Kerlinger's death.This is a must have book for anyone planning to do statistical analysis ,not only in psychology,but in the social sciences as well(especially economics).For example,Lee points out(pp.265,863)the importance of doing some type of test for goodness of fit(Chi- Square test,etc.)BEFORE a researcher assumes that he can make use of the normal probability distribution as an approximation of the data set at hand.This has not been the case in econometric time series studies of (a) financial markets(financial economics,portfolio analysis)or of(b) real,durable investment over the business cycle.The Black-Scholes equation and the CAPM model,both used as foundations in business finance courses in all countries worldwide, just assumes normality.The famous Keynes-Tinbergen debate about the logical foundations of econometrics in the Economic Journal of 1939-40 reveals that the founders of econometrics did not test the data correctly for normality.Keynes's comments about the necessity to demonstrate the uniformity,homogeneity,and stability of the time series data before any multiple regressions were run was ridiculed as the foolish ,out of date utterances of a once magnificient mind that had deteriorated by the late 1930's.Benoit Mandelbrot's massive data analysis,replicated by many different researchers in many different countries since the early 1970's,shows that the assumption of normality ,underlying statistical price data analysis done by economists in practically all financial markets(stocks,bonds,money,currency,exchange,commodities)over the last 60 years,is all wrong.There is one minor oversite in the fourth edition.There is no discussion of Ellsberg's paradox and/or ambiguous probabilities.Lee does ,of course, discuss Keynes's concept of the weight of the evidence and probabilities that have low weight.Both Lee and Brady had agreed 15 years ago that Keynes's w,defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1,was practically the same as Ellsberg's rho,defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1.In real life,most of the probabilities will turn out to be ambiguous(plus being underweighted).In such situations it will not be possible to treat probability according to the Kolmogorov axioms.The experimental-empirical work of Tversky-Kahneman demonstrates that the vast majority of real world decision makers are rational(contrary to the conclusion drawn from the evidence by Tversky-Kahneman)but are working with ambiguous or underweighted probabilities.

Such an excellent book

Kerlinger and Lee successfully describe scientific research and the process of research methods in details, types of quantitative and experimental studies, reliability and validity tests and so on. It is a great reference books, especially for MBA and PhD students.

About the Author
Jospeh Conrad (1957-1924) grew up amid political unrest in Russian-occupied Poland. After twenty years at sea with the French and British merchant navies, he settled in England in 1894. Over the next three decades he revolutionized the English novel with works such as Typhoon (1902), Youth (1902), Nostromo (1904), The Secret Agent (1907), Under Western Eyes (1911), Chance (1913), and Victory (1915).

Caryl Phillips is the author of many works of fiction and nonfiction. His novel A Distant Shore won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award. His other awards include the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Phillips is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and lives in New York City.

I've had to read this for a few classes and ...

I've had to read this for a few classes and I'm not a huge fan. The writing is a bit dense. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about literature, but I know there's quite a bit of analysis to be done here. I see this as more of a personal preference thing- I'd rather be reading Louise Gluck or Tracy Brimhall, that's all.

Excellent edition of classic novel

Published in 1899, Joseph Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS is like a fingerpost for its time, pointing the way of human preoccupations as they probed the final frontiers left in the world to discover, both geographically and intrapersonally, equipped only with a 19th century worldview. Where fear and discomfort with the unknown had once been associated with leaving land and heading into the open sea, Conrad now placed it in turning inward, turning from the sea up a river that penetrates an unknown land.

This is the story related one night to a group of London dwellers gathered on a dock boat in the safety and familiarity of the Thames. The speaker, a garrulous veteran seaman named Marlow, remembers how as a younger man he had pushed for the adventurous assignment of taking a steamboat up the Congo in search of a company's missing agent, Kurtz. His is a tale of horror, of what can happen to a person disengaged from civilization as it is known. This is an atmospheric exploration of knowledge, experience, innocence and morality. Conrad's language is complex but not opaque, has action but also a lot of description. As Virginia Woolf once said, Conrad could not write badly to save his own life.

That his vision requires rooting the horror in a hostile jungle culture and its customs can present a problem for a contemporary audience. The Modern Library has done a good job in introducing this edition with notable criticism, positive and negative, excerpted from across the 20th century, including pieces by Mencken, Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster and, more recently, Chinua Achebe. This edition also includes passages from Conrad's 1890 journal when he was traveling in the Congo. Several different publishers are publishing this novel, but this edition is the best I found.
