About the Author
Lewis Carroll is a pseudonym of the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who was born on January 27, 1832, and died on January 14, 1898. His most famous works are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There; and The Hunting of the Snark.

Martin Gardner (1914-2010) is regarded as one of the world's leading experts on Lewis Carroll and his work. The author of more than a hundred books, he wrote the "Mathematical Games" column for Scientific American for twenty-five years and has been hailed by Douglas Hofstadter as "one of the great intellects produced in this country in this century."

The many works of Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) include many humorous and political cartoons for Punch and other periodicals of the time, but he is best known for his illustrations of the original editions of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Class.

A Carroll Festival of Footnotes

When I was a child, I pored over my mother’s handed-down copies of “Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”. I was delighted by the other worlds down the rabbit hole and on the other side of the mirror, enthralled by the Cheshire Cat’s magical grin, the live playing cards and chessmen, the further adventures of my old friend Humpty Dumpty, and the antics of the Mad Hatter and March Hare. At the same time I felt some of the frustration that a child feels while sitting in on grown-ups’ conversation – I got the gist of the story, but I somehow knew that there was a lot that I wasn’t getting, grownup humor that was going on over my head. Even later, when I re-read Alice as a grown-up, I knew I wasn’t getting the point of a lot of the satire.

In “The Annotated Alice” Martin Gardner solves that problem completely and charmingly, with affectionate and witty footnote explanations of Carrollian wit that are almost as much fun to read as the original text, especially if you are a trivia nerd like me. Are you curious about the inspiration for “How doth the little crocodile/ improve his shining tail”? Here is the complete text of Rev. Isaac Watts poem “How doth the little busy bee/ improve each shining hour.” Is it true that John Tenniel’s drawings of the Mad Hatter were meant to represent British Prime Minister Gladstone? Gardner lays that myth to rest. Other notes explain in-jokes – allusions to incidents and people in Oxford and the family of Alice Liddell that would be clearly understood by his target audience, the real Alice and her sisters.

If you first met “Alice” in your youth and would like to know her better, I recommend you snuggle up with “The Annotated Alice” as your bedside companion. You will find unsuspected sophistication in this old treasure, you will feel younger with every page, and your dreams will be haunted by nothing worse than the Jabberwock.

Yet Another Edition, but it's Worth it.

I've been an Alice fan for years and have purchased every of the (many) editions of Annotated Alice. You would think that this one would have nothing new to offer after so many previous editions, but it really does.

There are many new illustrations included which are not often seen, and other little extras that make this 150th Anniversary Edition a real treat. Great for the Alice novice or advanced fan of the books. The annotations will open a whole new universe to readers.

Hefty and beautiful

I don't always like annotated editions, but I bought this one because both stories were included and it retains all of the original illustrations like the ones I remember reading as a child. Having said that, I enjoyed the illustrations by other artists included for historical context. Some of them are quite stunning, in fact. The thing I hate about annotated editions is the way the annotations create visual "clutter." Yes, that is the case here as well. I really have to force my slightly OCD-like mind to ignore that and concentrate on the text of the story. However, as a history buff, I enjoy reading the annotations from a historical perspective. It's a big book, so if you enjoy a hefty hardcover, this is the one for you.

The start of an excellent European Graphic Novel series

OK, before you get excited by my review of Five Stars be aware that is for art and story alone. Judging the format and the size of the book I would give it two stars. And if I would rate the editing done it gets one star. Read on for a further explanation.

LEO , the artist of this project is Brazilian , now age 70 is most famous for his later solo work The Aldebaran series of of Science Fiction graphic novels done for the Franco Belgian market. LEO is a pseudonym for Luis Eduardo de Oliveira.

This series consists of Five volumes and was done with writer Rodolphe, this one originally appeared in 2001. Cinebook has been translating and reprinting these books for The British and American marketplace. I applaud their their decision , but lament the results.

The original books are pricey but beautiful. They are oversized Hardcovers. Cinebook reduces the art down to comic book size and prints in as a cheap trade paperback. Just looking through the book you will realize that this book contains many more panels per page then your average comic , that is because it is meant to be read in the larger size.

The reproduction and the coloring look very good despite the reduction. The biggest offense they have committed is obscuring the rather harmless nudity on pages 7 and 20. In the first case they have drawn what looks like a swimsuit on a woman bent on seduction. The second is even worse with black clunky shadows being added to our heroine's figure as she is seen changing for bed. Their belief is that the nudity would prevent children from buying it. Really in today's age how many children are likely to buy this to begin with. If kids are reading comics , I don't see this being a likely selection when straight up Porn is available every where now for any youths looking for it. This Puritan Censorship of art is never OK with me. It already says for ages 15 and older on the back cover, change that if you like.

Sorry for the rant, but I think this is a case of a publisher just not understanding their market.

The story takes place in 1947 Africa an expedition party has disappeared after sighting what looks like a prehistoric animal. Miss Austin arrives in Kenya from England to take over a teaching position. She meets two fellow teachers from France and Germany who are rivals for her affection. Together they discover more mysteries including a big crater and a flying saucer picture.

This is start of a great series and I plan to be on board for it all , and maybe someday we will get the unedited version in the format it deserves.

I came to know about leo for mthe aldebaraan series.. The first few books in that episode were really great, but by the time antares came along, I started losing interest..

And then I saw this series. I had to give it a try. Bought the first one. Liked it. Placed everything else available in the series on pre-order.

Another winner!

This book was released today and I just spent three hours reading it to my seven year old son. We actually re-read the entire series, which we own, in anticipation of this sequel, and finished book 10 last night before starting this one tonight.

If you are a fan of Captain Underpants then this book is a sure bet. In fact, I think it may be his best work yet in terms of plot development and amusing moments. My son laughed out loud SO many times and I have to admit I did, too!

There was a possible discrepancy between this book and the previous one. In the previous book, the time travel was stated as 30 years in the future (and the adult George and Harold were 39 3/4 and 40yo respectively) but in this book it was stated repeatedly as being forty years in the future. It did not seem to be a plot development issue, just a mistake. I went back and reread it to try to figure it out but I was left a little confused. If I am incorrect, please comment!

In any case, the book was amazing, and my son never would have noticed the 30years/40years thing on his own! Thanks Dav for another really funny, well put together book that encourages kids to be kids, as obnoxious and as loud and with all the potty humor that it entails. You outdid yourself on the Uranus jokes in this one, though the potty song in the last one was pretty hilarious to my seven year old, too. I am always amused at seeing him so amused. :) you keep making them and we will keep buying them, as we read them repeatedly. This one is no exception, and in fact I think it is one of your best. Thank you!

Good Formula, But I Couldn't Get Into It

First the good. I think that this type of book is great for getting kids interested in reading "chapter books". The illustrations are funny-looking (that's good), the story is lighthearted, and there are built-in amusements (two frame crude animations, for lack of a better term). So we have a great formula here.

But here's where it falls short of its potential:

I loved Mad Magazine as a kid. It was zany but easy to understand and follow. This book is zany, but difficult to follow. Also there is a good amount of humor that I would not expect children to understand. For example, the name Miss Anthrope. A kid would think it was just a meaningless zany name. One who understands the "punny" name would probably not find it funny. I found it mildly funny. There is also adult humor (no, not that kind). That is to say, humor that only an adult *might* find funny, simply because they can understand the zaniness. I'm referring specifically to such things as the mention of biological concepts (lipids, RNA, etc.) that would likely be understood only by advanced high school students or college students taking introductory biology classes. As a kid, I could appreciate zaniness only when I understood it. I still don't laugh at quantum mechanics jokes.

In addition to things that go over a kid's head, there is the story itself. Now this is a toss up. Some kids might like stories that are just jam packed with off the wall zaniness. I don't. Even as a kid, I would enjoy it much better if the story relied more on funny situations for laughs.

This style of book has great potential. I think funny illustrations of funny situations would knock the ball out of the park.

While the book in its current form, misses the mark for me, if you are the type of person who likes my general description of the contents of the book, by all means, buy a copy to "test it out". Taste in humor is sometimes like taste in music - unexplainable from one person to the next.

Dimitri Aivaliotis works as a Systems Architect at a hosting provider in Zurich, Switzerland. His career has taken him from building a Linux-based computer network for a school to dual-datacenter high-availability infrastructures for banks and online portals. He has spent over a decade solving his customers' problems and discovered NGINX along the way. He uses the software daily to provide web serving, proxying, and media-streaming services to his customers.

Dimitri graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and received an MS in Management Information Systems at Florida State University.

Much better than other options on the topic

This book is well written and does not suffer from what I have come to call "The Packt Problem." I hope this is a sign that Packt's copy editing process has improved and that there is now a stronger commitment to offer titles that are worthy of being read because of the quality of the writing as well as the quality and uniqueness of the technical content.

Mastering NGINX is intended for experienced systems administrators and systems engineers, people who are familiar with using and administering *nix machines and configuring servers. This is not a beginner book. For me, that is a plus. It allows the author to get right down to business with NGINX.

We start with a short and typical installation chapter, complete with a discussion of modules that includes third-party modules and their benefits and risks. Installing using the package managers of several types of Linux distributions is covered along with compiling from source and the various flags and configure options available.

The next chapter jumps right in to the good stuff. Most of the NGINX materials I once used tell you what to change, but not why to change it. For a long time I was left wondering how to tell when to use specific configuration options, which files to find them in, and what the parameters are that I can use. The goal of this book is not to tell you what to do, but to describe these very things, so that in the end, you should be able to find and open an NGINX configuration file and edit it to fit your situation. Well done.

I was a little concerned when I realized that I was nearing the end of the chapter and still had some questions in my mind about some of the parameters and settings. Then I read this on page 40 in the chapter summary:

"What we did not cover in this chapter are the configuration options provided by the various modules that may be compiled into your nginx binary. These additional directives will be touched upon through the book, as that particular module is used to solve a problem. Also absent was an explanation of the variables that NGINX makes available for its configuration. These too will be discussed later in this book. This chapter's focus was on the basics of configuring NGINX."

Bravo! The author was thinking ahead, anticipated my concerns, and addressed them immediately at the point I had them.

The rest of the book gives deeper, more detailed information about specific uses for NGINX. Topics covered include using NGINX for serving mail, reverse proxying, setting up security, HTTP serving, including setting up your server for use with PHP), caching, tracking, and various sorts of troubleshooting. I was thrilled to see the appendices, especially the rewrite rule guide, as when I tried to do rewrites a few years ago, I couldn't find any good information and only achieved anything through trial and error.

I was pleased to see how complete and clear the book is. Kudos to the author, the reviewers and editors, and the publisher. I recommend this book to anyone who uses NGINX or wants to do so.

Well-written guide to nginx

Our team has been using nginx for two years, but nobody on our team could say "I know nginx well". Over the years we've been adapting snippets from the nginx wiki and random blog posts, and the often inconsistent structure of our config files reflects this trial-and-error approach.

Every 6 months I go on Amazon and see if anyone's written a well-written nginx overview that covers most of the important modules and directives, and includes sample config files to teach best practices example. Although there's 2 previous packt books available, their terrible reviews make it clear they're no better than 90% of the schlock that Packt publishes.

Fortunately, Mastering Nginx couldn't be more different. At 348 carefully-written and edited pages, it manages to provide a great overview to technically-included beginners, while covering a lot of advanced topics you'll meet in production. It's telling that one of the technical reviewers is Andrew Alexeev, a co-founder of nginx and the author of the nginx section of The Architecture Of Open Source Applications, Volume Ii

As I run a Drupal shop, I was happy to see that it includes meaningful coverage of reverse proxies, php-fpm, and even Drupal specifically. Additionally, I learned a lot looking over the sections on memory tuning, access logs for debugging, and SSL.

Based on a quick skim, I can confidently say that this book will teach you a lot about nginx, both as tutorial and reference. It's now mandatory reading for anyone on our team who will ever touch an nginx config file.

Not worth $45!

I wanted to learn how deploy Nginx for PHP. I had looked over the Nginx website and searched the web, but what I found was confusing. This book didn't really help. The information is not presented in an order that lets you start building a useful config file. Useful info to get your config file working is spread all over the book, bits and pieces here and there. As I slowly learn more about how to write the Nginx config file, I realize that the book could have done a much better job at presenting and organizing the material. At $45 for the paperback, it's a very poor value.

About the Author
Paul Robichaux got his first computer at age 8 and quickly developed the bad habit of spending time with it instead of playing outside. Over his career, he eventually learned the value of exercise and the great outdoors, but he still spends an inordinate amount of time tinkering with computers and networks for his customers. Along the way, he’s worked as a software developer, instructor, and consultant, written several books, earned his pilot’s license, and started running triathlons. Paul was awarded the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award for Exchange for 11 years running, and in 2014 he was inducted into the Exchange Hall of Fame. As a principal architect at Summit 7 Systems, Paul focuses on Office 365, Exchange Server, and Lync.

A structural engineer by education, Bhargav Shukla discovered his attraction to computers during his computer technology education at college. The choice was clear when he had to choose between a Masters in Civil Engineering and a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certification. The rest is a blur. Over the past 20 years, he has amassed experience with multiple products and platforms, but never letting his first love for Exchange fade. Ever since his Microsoft Mail days, he has been fascinated with the power of messaging and has kept up with the ever-changing world of the Exchange Server platform. Not Worth the Paper It's Printed On

This book does not cover the topics in adequate detail for exam reference. The book's Objective Review questions ask things that are not even covered in the book. This series is a money grab from MS Press.
You are better off reading TechNet pages for Exchange 2013/Online. For exam preparation, I would suggest the Mastering Exchange Server 2013 book from Sybex.

Written for people who don't really have a lot of Exchange background, but, says it is written for it. Read about half of it before giving up on gaining anything useful, and went to the Inside-Out series, which gives information in a more X's and Y's format, vs here where it's almost as if someone was asked to talk about Exchange 2013. I tried to absorb something from this book to help me pass the 70-341, but, I don't think it really gave me anything I didn't already know.
