Chris Conlan began his career as an independent data scientist specializing in trading algorithms. He attended the University of Virginia where he completed his undergraduate statistics coursework in three semesters. During his time at UVA, he secured initial fundraising for a privately held high-frequency forex group as president and chief trading strategist. He is currently managing the development of private technology companies in high-frequency forex, machine vision, and dynamic reporting.

The examples, code, and technical details are all highly relevant, up to date, and useful for designing a trading system.

If you're looking for a readable book for learning trading in R, that is also incredibly in-depth, then this is a great buy. The author has a way about explaining the development of the code as well as the making of the platform which makes it incredibly easy to grasp. This book gave great insights into the theory behind automated trading, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in getting into this field. 10/10

A Thorough Treatment of Automated Trading

Automated Trading with R is a thoughtful, clearly laid out, and complete description of how to build trading systems that actually work. So often books of this nature leave out crucial pieces of system construction either out of incompetence or "as an exercise for the reader," but that is not the case here. The scope is broad enough and each subject addressed with enough specificity that anybody from a relative novice to a seasoned pro can gain something from reading this book.

Conlan takes us through:
- Networking: how to get data and make trades via the internet
- Data Preparation: what to do with data once you have it
- Indicators: how to construct the signals that inform trading decisions
- Rule Sets: combining indicators at the portfolio level to decide when & how to trade
- High-Performance Computing: where to look for performance gains in one's code
- Simulation and Backtesting: putting everything together to predict historical performance
- Optimization: finding strategies that work

In addition to covering the fundamental theory and technical hurdles involved in each topic, the author focuses on providing functional example code which by the end amounts to a fully functional trading system. I look forward to implementing the lessons learned in my own trading system, including much of the example code provided.

Content Matters provides an elegant rethinking of our craft.

In a climate where the term"literacy" is so ubiquitous that it has lost its meaning, this text provides a refocusing for readers of what it really means to be literate within a particular content area.

Each chapter provides deep, clear insight into how content-specific literacy is developed. Building deep content knowledge from complex text is the task, and this clarification provides a response to the cry, "I'm not a reading teacher."

While the chapters move across disciplines, a common, inquiry-based methodology is also outlined and can be seen at the core of each discipline-specific chapter. That methodology has profound implications for educators especially in light of the CCSS.

This text helped me to understand that, as experts in our disciplines, we need to apprentice students to the knowledge and content of each field not by showing or doing the work for them, but by supporting them as they struggle to make meaning from the complex text of each discipline. While this might be something that a good educator "already knows", as one reviewer stated, it is a far cry from what most educators remember to do in a climate that has spawned so many misguided practices. The message here is both a return and a step forward. Content Matters provides an elegant reminder of what is at the heart if our craft.

A Helpful Guide Across Disciplines

Content Matters has helped me understand and apply the principles of disciplinary literacy in my work. This book encouraged me to consider the various ways each discipline values and uses reading, writing, talking, and reasoning to scaffold students’ learning of content knowledge appropriate to particular disciplines. Particularly helpful, the ELA lesson and design features outline concrete ways to apprentice students into ELA work. I have come across numerous articles and books that describe how students can think like a scientist or think like a historian. As someone who cares deeply about the study English Language Arts, I found value in outlining what it means to work in ways specific to ELA instead of treating ELA with a generalist approach. This book also helped me locate similarities and differences among the ways various disciplines understand the use of evidence and what it means to engage in inquiry. After reading this book, I not only understand the work of other disciplines better, but I also understand how to scaffold students’ work in ways specific to my content area, ELA.

Great book for thinking about literacy across the disciplines

Content Matters is an extremely useful tool for understanding how inquiry and academically productive talk can support literacy development and improve student learning. Each chapter focuses on supporting literacy development in the different disciplines and moves from providing the how and the why to showing what the practices look like in real classrooms through case studies.

Being able to read about literacy development in the different subject areas has helped me to understand not only what I should be doing to help my students further develop their literacy skills in the ELA classroom, but to think about the literacy skills they may develop in math, science, and history and how I may be able to build upon the literacy practices of other disciplines. It’s not often that teachers of different disciplines get together to talk about the literacy they teach, Content Matters would be great to use in a PLC as a tool to open the lines of communication between teachers in thinking about literacy and how we can work across the content areas to strengthen students’ skills.

Professor Ott has received major awards from Brigham Young University that recognize his accomplishments in teaching and in research, including the Distinguished Faculty Lecture Award, the most prestegious award given by the university.

Juliana Boerio-Goates is a Professor of Chemistry at Brigham Young University, USA. She has taught chemical thermodynamics to undergraduate and graduate students for 18 years and has written almost 50 publications in the scientific literature. Professor Boerio-Goatesserves on the Advisory Board of the Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics and has received major awards for teaching and for research fromBrigham Young University which recognize her accomplishments and ability in both areas.

how can be a physics of NON-MATTER? The soul is Spiritual, not material, so laws of physics dose not apply to SOUL!

I did mistake by buying this book. I am studying spirituality for the last 4-5 years. I though the author may have given some logical explanation of soul in this book. It turned out 180 degrees opposite and he cites Sanatana Dharma scriptures in a wrong way. He does not KNOW Shrimad Bhagavad Gita ([...]) or Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapuran ([...]) so how can he cite is a proper perspective? I submitted a query on author's website and he has not cared to answer yet. This is another reason that he dose not know the subject well but misguiding mass of people by giving an attractive title, how can be a physics of NON-MATTER. The soul is Spiritual, not material, so laws of physics dose not apply to SOUL.

A very good plac read. I liked the way he explained step bhysicsy step how the transfer of the soul takes place, how quantum physics is involved..A little difficult ( for me) to grasp in a few places.However, I loved the information about our eternal existance."Food for the soul."

Physics of the Soul: The Quantum Book of Living, Dying, Reincarnation and Immortality I think it is a very good work by one of the scientists who appeared on the What The Bleep movies. I do think that the title - Physics of the Soul - is a bit ambitious. It implies a rigorous scientific investigation of the soul and how it work. The truth is more much eastern religion, some science. Having said that - it is interesting easy to read, informative and educational. Just not all that scientific.

Dr Elizabeth Churchill is a Director of User Experience at Google. Her work focuses on the connected ecosystems of the Social Web and Internet of Things.

For 2 decades, Elizabeth has been a research leader at well-known corporate R&D organizations including Fuji Xerox’s research lab in Silicon Valley (FXPAL), the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), eBay Research Labs in San Jose, and Yahoo! in Santa Clara, California.

Elizabeth is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and Speaker. She is also a member of the ACM's SIGCHI Academy, in recognition of her contributions to the field of Human Computer Interaction. She served in the ACM SIGCHI Executive Committee for 8 years, 6 years of those as Executive Vice President, and is the current Secretary/Treasurer of the ACM.

Elizabeth has contributed groundbreaking research in a number of areas, publishing over 100 peer reviewed articles, co-editing 5 books in HCI related fields, contributing as a regular columnist for the Association of Computing Machinery's (ACM) interactions magazine since 2008, and publishing an academic textbook, Foundations for Designing User Centered Systems. Her upcoming book, Designing with Data, will be published in 2016. She has also launched successful products, and has more than 50 patents granted or pending.

About the Author
Gail Simon:

I came to systemic practice through social work in the early 1980s when I trained in family therapy using structural, strategic and early Milan approaches. I undertook further training at the Kensington Consultation Centre (KCC) in London in the early 1990s. In 1990, I co-founded The Pink Practice as a response to oppressive psychotherapeutic practices against the lesbian, gay and queer communities. Lots of people think research is dull until they find out how many forms of inquiry there are which echo the values and activities of their own practice. My doctoral research was on “Writing (as) Systemic Practice” in which I experimented with dialogical writing styles to reflect my conversational and ethical practice in therapy, supervision and education. I lead the Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice at the University of Bedfordshire and enjoy researching the extraordinariness that is involved in human systems and writing and editing for professional journals and for the new systemic practice publishing tent, Everything is Connected Press.


Alex Chard:

In the early part of my career I worked within the voluntary and statutory sectors with young people in trouble. I then began to work independently. I work as a systemic organisational consultant, a role which includes inquiry into organisational functioning, culture and practice. Over 23 , my consultancy practice has included public sector contexts including work within children’s social care, education, youth work, criminal justice and within the voluntary sector. My experience of assisting organisations manage change has included working with statutory boards, with management teams helping them to improve their services and on occasion managing services or critical projects. My current organisational inquiry and research contexts include conducting inter-agency case reviews where significant harm has been caused and in that context developing reflexive approaches to creating pan-organisational learning. My MSc. dissertation was a systemic inquiry into the impact of government inspection on the management of a service. My doctoral thesis The Art of Organisational Development was on creating systemic change and development in public sector management. I am also a visiting senior lecturer to the Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice at the University of Bedfordshire and have developed a systemic module for a Social Work Masters Programme.

The contents of this book were a little uneven, but still it was an enlightening introduction to qualitative research as it is carried out in the context of systemic inquiry.
