About the Author
Sandor Lehoczky participated in the Math Olympiad Summer Program in 1989, and in 1990 earned the sole perfect AIME score and led the national first place team on the AHSME (now AMC 12). Richard Rusczyk is the founder of the Art of Problem Solving website. He was a national MATHCOUNTS participant in 1985, a three-time participant in the Math Olympiad Summer Program, a perfect AIME scorer in 1989, and a USA Mathematical Olympiad winner. He is author or co-author of 6 Art of Problem Solving textbooks. Lehoczky and Rusczyk were co-founders of the Mandelbrot Competition and are board members of the Art of Problem Solving Foundation.

Brilliant, Beautiful, and Essential for the Aspiring Student

Sandor Lehoczky and Richard Rusczyk have done us all a tremendous favor. They have laid out the concepts in an incredibly clear learning path, and the volume covers the gamut of elementary and intermediate mathematics topics. In addition to the breadth of material is the tantalizing depth of material that the authors have taken time to draw from various mathematics mathematics competitions. In fact, I'd be confident to say that no high school curriculum or standardized test would pose a challenge to any student who has mastered the first volume of this series.

When my friends ask for recommendations on educational books for their children, I am always sure to include this series. Even though I majored in economics and mathematics, I still have an incredibly fun time working on a few of the more challenging problems; I could only wish that I had been introduced to this book when I had first started learning math. This book is truly an invaluable resource.

A wonderful collection of problem solving topics!

I bought this book to do math with my children, and to brush up on a few of the missing pieces in my own background. It has been a wonderful resource. The topics are covered in fresh ways that lead to insights into the various subjects, and the problem sets provide excellent practice for each subject. The problems are not just the routine problems you find in regular school textbooks - they force you to bring together ideas from several areas and think more deeply about the topics. I would strongly recommend volumes 1 and 2 to any student wanting to get a broad background for dealing with challenging problems at the middle school to high school levels.

I would point out that so far that the lessons and in-chapter problems seem like Algebra II material rather than anything unique

I didn't realize I need the answer key, so I'm waiting for delivery of it now. The oddness of this book is that the in-chapter problems are quite basic and then the end of chapter problems jump to near-impossible! So we need the answer key - I'm hoping it actually explains the problems because I am a 40+ year old engineer and without a half hour for some of the problems at my disposal I cannot explain them to my son :)

Also, I would point out that so far that the lessons and in-chapter problems seem like Algebra II material rather than anything unique.

About the Author
Paul (The Tutor) Osborne, Ed.M., has been preparing students with learning disabilities for the SAT for the past seven years. As a dyslexic test taker himself, Paul understands the unique challenges LD students face when it comes to taking the SAT. After earning his Masters of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Paul began teaching general SAT-preparation classes for Princeton Review. He then went on to train and supervise other SAT course instructors.

It's about time!

With the number of kids diagnosed with learning disabilities steadily increasing, the need for a book like this has never been greater. I am surprised more educators had not demanded that a book like this be written 10 years ago. Fortunately, Paul Osborne has stepped in with a combination of real life experience (he too is a dyslexic test-taker) and great methods that he has developed over the course of a 10 year + career as an educator. The book contains great advice and easy to follow steps to help kids with a variety of learning differences tackle the SAT and excel. An excellent resource.

Good ideas but if you don't qualify for extra time, hard to use

This book is easy to read with some good common sense ideas. That said, if you don't qualify for extra time, you won't have time to do the things suggested in the book. If you do qualify, this is a good investment.
