About the Author
Michael Newton has taught at University College London and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. This is his first book. He currently teaches at Princeton University. He divides his time between London and Princeton, New Jersey.

Update of a fine reference

Expanded and updated edition of his original that came out in 2000. There are now entries on cases that have been solved since the first edition was released. Examples: Gary Leon Ridgway, the Green River Killer and Dennis Rader, the BTK Strangler. Other cases have been expanded. Some that were only listed in the appendixes now have entries in the main section.

The author uses the definition of a serial killer as someone who murders 2 or more persons, done as separate events. This leads to inclusion of some killers that most people would not consider serial killers. I understand the author going for a more inclusive approach than otherwise. If he didn't go this route, there would inevitably be complaints about killers left out.

I spotted very few errors and none that I would categorize as major.

I would like to see a much more comprehensive index. Trying to find an entry if all you remember is a victim name or an odd location is difficult.

The entries range from a few paragraphs to several pages. Still, if you want a detailed read on a specific case, you will need to get a book devoted to that killer. There are entries on some killers that there hasn't been a book written about, such as Melvin Rees.

Of the three SK Encyclopedias I've read, this is the best, in my opinion.

The reviews for the first edition are still mostly applicable here. I recommend reading them for other viewpoints.

Updated issue of a fascinating encyclopedia

This is a fascinating read for true crime buffs. The author's stated purpose is to "demystify, as far as possible, those predators in human form who have been with us since the dawn of history..." Serial killers at large are so frightening that they end up touching all of our lives--most especially in the United States, where 84% of all known serial killers have committed their crimes since 1980. I first became aware of this type of human predator when I was a student at the University of Michigan, and John Norman Collins was murdering coeds with pierced ears and long brown hair.

California native Michael Newton has published 181 books since 1977, including 147 novels but he is best known for his true crime and reference works. I have to say that I assumed this author was British because of his concise, witty style and also for his tendency to critique other true crime authors who failed to get their facts straight, including the names of a serial killer's victims. One of his special peeves is the term 'spree killer,' and he also doesn't seem to think much of profilers.

Most of the entries in this encyclopedia are concerned with the serial killers themselves, whether they acted alone, in twosomes, or in packs. One of the biggest surprises for me was the large number of serial killers who are or were women. Something like 12% of all serial killers are female, and Hungarian women seem especially prone to this behavior, starting with Countess Erzsebet B'thory in the sixteenth century whose final body count was somewhere between 300 and 650 victims. In the early 1900s,Vera Renczi murdered 35 husbands, lovers, and a son and was arrested by the police only after they searched her basement and discovered 35 zinc coffins. "Some evenings, Vera liked to sit among the coffins in an armchair and enjoy the company of her adoring beaux." Then there were the "Angel Makers of Nagyrev"...

Well, let me just close by remarking that "The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers" is an extremely interesting source of information on the darker side of human nature. In addition to the encyclopedia entries, there are also appendices on "Solo Killers," "Team Killers," and "Unresolved Cases," plus an extensive bibliography.

labeling with colloidal gold conjugates

It is an excellent handbook for electron microscopy. In the section of labeling with protein A / colloidal gold, the author fails to acknowledge the original contribution on the subject: Romano EL and Romano MS: Staphylococcal protein A bound to colloidal gold: a useful reagent to label antigen-antibody sites in electron microscopy. Immunochemistry 14:711-715,1977. I think that the omission is unfair because later works by others are cited in the same section of the book

A Reminder to Love Yourself and Understand Human Nature

I read a book almost every week, but this is my first book review. I felt that if my review were the reason any woman (or man), who might otherwise be put off from buying this book by the Cosmo-esque title, actually went ahead and bought it and changed their relationships and lives for the better, well then the benefit (improved lives) would have vastly outweighed the cost (the 15 minutes I spent writing this that I could have spent working, eating, conversating). Ergo, my review.

First, the most important thing to recognize is that this book is not for every woman (or man). If you meet some of the following (related) criteria:

3) You are already in a successful relationship or don't tend to have much trouble in relationships
...then you've probably already internalized the essence of the book. You don't need it. At best, employing its strategies would be redundant, at worst, disingenuous.

2) You've been dating a guy for a while, but he doesn't want to commit.
3) You're in a relationship, and your boyfriend was so sweet in the beginning, and he slowly or suddenly stopped. You feel taken for granted.

It's like the clouds opened up and God slapped some common sense into me. Somewhere between my parents' divorce, my mom's emotional unavailability, The Notebook (the book AND the movie), memes about "love is hard work" and "love conquers all", in the name of finding the love I so desperately wanted and needed, I had not only forgotten about number one (myself!), but I had forgotten some very basic tenets of human nature.

In a nutshell:

1) Above all, love yourself and love your life. Fill it with people who matter. Fill it with passions and interests. Fill it with memorable experiences. Constantly seek to be challenged and learn and fail and grow.

2) When a man enters your life, don't over-invest your time or your mental real estate. Make him a part of your life, just like every other part. Don't lose your rhythm. Especially if he is not chasing after you, but EVEN IF HE IS. Human nature reminder: People are myopic - they see the fun in seeing you all the time, but not the disinterest and contempt that such continual contact will breed. You have to keep the balance. If you fail to balance his part in your life, you lose your rhythm, you lose track of what it is that fulfills you - and you start to seek it from him. You become needy.

3) If at some point, you have not followed 2), you've showed him that you need him, and it will follow that he will become complacent. He'll be less affectionate, stop taking you out, etc. etc. Human nature reminder: People are pragmatic and somewhat lazy - if they can do less or more, and still get the same result, they will do less. Always. Maybe you'll try to talk to him or start to nag him. But he's putting less effort, you're still around and you still care (because you're nagging him), he has no incentive to change. People don't listen to words, they listen to action. So if he's not treating you right, stop putting yourself in a position to be treated not right. Stop showing affection. Stop contacting him. Stop being available and accepting last-minute invites to the guys' house.

I suppose I can see how people might perceive this as "game playing" or being inauthentic. Because really, you like or love the guy, you want to hug and kiss him and offer him backrubs, even when he's not treating you right. In your head (as was in my head), if you were the perfect girlfriend, if you did everything you could, maybe he'd see it and turn himself around. So in a way, to withhold affection or to say "no, sorry, I'm busy" when you're not actually busy is inauthentic. But only at first. I promise, after that, it becomes easier. Because slowly, you are empowering yourself. You are saying that you love yourself enough to do the thing you don't want to in the moment (to say no) to gain the thing you deserve long-term (to be treated with love and respect). And then it's easy, and it's real.

It's like telling you to do this

Extremely negative book. I didn't get to finish. Actually the author see the relationship from the surface, rather than seeing it through why women are doing those things. It's not from a holistic perspective, but a narrow personal view. It's kind of depressing to read. It's like telling you to do this, don't do that. It's hard. You know those rules, but if you really live on them, you're not being yourself. If women having difficulties dealing with relationship, then it's more important to look into self and learn to self love. Grow from it rather than following these rules. The author is saying how the women magazines give so many bad advices on relationship. But he's doing the same thing, while he just think his opinion is "right".
Wish could return the book and get refund. Waste of money. I would really like to see something that's enpowering and positive

About the Author
Sharon Rady Rolfes is a registered dietician nutritionist and a founding member of Nutrition and Health Associates, an information resource center that maintains a research database on more than 1,000 nutrition-related topics. She has taught at Florida State University and coauthored several other college textbooks, including UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, 10th EDITION. In addition to writing, she serves as a consultant for various educational projects, and volunteers on the board of Working Well, a community initiative dedicated to creating a healthy workforce. A member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ms. Rady Rolfes received her MS in nutrition and food science from Florida State University.

Kathryn Pinna received her M.S. and Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught nutrition, food science, and human biology courses in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years and has also worked as an outpatient dietitian, Internet consultant, and freelance writer. Her other publications include the textbooks Understanding Normal and Clinical Nutrition and Nutrition for Health and Health Care. She is a registered dietitian and member of the American Society for Nutrition and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Ellie Whitney, Ph.D. grew up in New York City and received her BA and PhD degrees in English and Biology at Harvard and Washington Universities. She taught at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, wrote newspaper columns on environmental matters for the TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT, and coauthored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics, many of which repeatedly reappear as new editions. She spen three decades exploring outdoor Florida and studying its ecology, and then cowrote PRICELESS FLORIDA: NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS AND NATIVE SPECIES (Pineapple Press, 2004). Now retired, and more concerned about climate change than any other issue, she volunteers full-time for the nonpartisan national nonprofit Citizens Climate Lobby.

I bought this book as a requirement for one of my classes. The school was selling this book new for a bit more than $400, I found it new on Amazon for less than $274. It was a great deal.

The book was very helpful to my class. But it was much more helpful to me personally 'cause it helped me understand how to choose my meals wisely. It is the kind of book that you want to keep forever as it has really helpful information that you can apply to your everyday life. I would recommend whoever is interesting in learning more about having a healthy diet to buy this book. It is an amazing guide on how to eat to live healthy as you learn how to choose food, snacks, drinks, etc wisely.

I understand that it is used but there needs to be a better screening process for used rented books

This is going to be difficult to use. There is all types of em marks, circled words, highlighting and even different colors. Just awful. I understand that it is used but there needs to be a better screening process for used rented books. Everyone learns differently, I understand that, but now my learning will be impacted because of the markings. At least it should be rented for cheaper if it is not of a good quality like this book is not. Very disappointed and dissatisfied.

Great first bridge book for young AND old

I used to play bridge during medical school and when I noticed my 9th grader showing interest in hearts and Eucre I decided to buy this book for him for Christmas. We are reading it together and I am learning as much as him. I agree with the other reviewer in that this is not just a book for kids but valuable as a first book for adults who want to learn. I highly recommend it as a first book for young and old.

We got this for our grand-children (9 and 11)who were able to use it to get started playing bridge. It goes from the very basics up to rather advanced bidding, etc.

Kate Hudgins, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist, an International Master Trainer in Psychodrama, and primary developer of The Therapeutic Spiral Model. She directs the International Certification Program in Experiential Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and has trained more than 800 psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors and educators to build Action Trauma Teams using the model. Kate continues to bring this healing method to global sites of trauma and conflict. Francesca Toscani, M.Ed., a certified Trainer in Psychodrama, Sociometry, and Group Psychotherapy and psychotherapist for thirty years, is co-developer of TSM. Combining her Jungian and psychodrama backgrounds, she developed Sandrama, a union of sandtray therapy with psychodramatic action. Francesca works part-time with small groups and individuals cultivating beauty and spirituality.

About the Author
Linda Brannon received her Ph.D. in human experimental psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Brannon and co-author Jess Feist are both professors in the department of Psychology at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where they have been teaching since receiving their doctorates. After becoming interested in the emerging field of health psychology, Brannon and Feist co-authored the first edition of this text in the 1980s, and they have enjoyed expanding and developing their text along with the field for more than two decades. In addition to her work in health psychology, Dr. Brannon has authored a text on gender and is co-author of an introductory psychology text.

About the Author

Russ White, CCIE No. 2635, is a principal engineer in the IPOS team at Ericsson. He has worked in routing protocols and routed network design for the past 15 years. Russ has spoken at Cisco Live, Interop, LACNOG, and other global industry venues. He is actively involved in the IETF and the ISOC, has co-authored more than 30 software patents in the area of network protocols, and has co-authored nine books in the area of network protocols, design, and architecture. He holds a Master of Information Technology in Network Design and Architecture from Capella University and a Master of Christian Ministry in Christian literature from Shepherds Theological Seminary.

Denise Donohue, CCIE No. 9566 (Routing and Switching), is a senior solutions architect with Chesapeake NetCraftsmen. Denise has worked with computer systems since the mid-1990s, focusing on network design since 2004. During that time she has designed for a wide range of networks, private and public, of all sizes, across most industries. Denise has also authored or co-authored many Cisco Press books covering data and voice networking technologies and spoken at Cisco Live and other industry events.

EXCELLENT NETWORK ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN RESOURCE GUIDE!!

Are you a network designer or architect? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Russ White and Denise Donohue, have done an outstanding job of writing a book examines the intersection of flow, time and people, across two broadly competing and more widely understood realms: business and technology.

Authors White and Donohue, begin by discussing what information you need to determine business requirements, and how to gather that information. Then, the authors examine how to apply business knowledge in creating the network blueprint. They continue by examining at a high level, how you can use business knowledge to create a custom network design that helps support or even improve the way a company does business. Then, the authors introduce models, by describing how protocols interact to transport data across a network, including the well known ISO seven-layer model, and the lesser known four-layer Department of Defense model; as well as, the little known iterative model. They then discuss the crucial questions that every network designer needs to be able to answer about every link type, and why each of these questions matters. Next, the authors show you how to modularize, and then consider the trade-offs between modularization and network efficiency. They continue by covering hierarchical design; considering what it is; and, why hierarchical design works the way it does. Then, the authors look at redundancy, because it is the primary that is used to build resilience into a network. They then explore the Observe, Orient, Decide, Act loop; and, how it applies to the never-ending cycle of attack and defense. Next, the authors show you how to minimize the pain of network management, while maximizing the gain. They continue by defining what a tunnel is; as well as, a need to consider the underlying questions any network designer or architect should ask about any virtualization technology. Then, the authors deal with the question of which routing protocol is best: Exposing the questions network architects need to ask in order to answer that question, rather than providing a one size fits all solution. They then try to make complexity a little less fuzzy. Next, the authors will consider some hard and fast realities about device mobility, primarily focused on how and where to hold the state needed to make mobility work. They continue by examining cloud computing, with a look back through the history of information technology, so that they can put it all in context. Then, the authors discuss what an SDN is, and present one specific taxonomy, or method of classifying SDNs. Finally, they give you a solid theoretical understanding of the problems onto which you can lay specific solutions.

For those readers who are very much tech savvy, this excellent book probably feels like it is too much about business, and not much about technology. Nevertheless, this is going to be the nature of a great book that covers such a broad cross-section of ideas that are each very deep in their own right.

Fantastic book. Very rare to find a design book that covers a tremendous amount of topics and, at the same time, presents them in a very direct and matter-of-fact manner. Russ White explains things like no other author. Advanced topics are presented in an easy-to-read manner which makes them "easy" to digest. His style, combined with technical insight and tremendous experience, are very unique. Whether an expert or a novice, anyone interested in the value of good design can benefit from this book.
