A book for all times, but not for all readers

Question: How can you ensure that a person will hate a book? Answer: Make her read it for 7th grade English class, make sure that the language is old-fashioned, and above all, make sure that the ideas and concepts are over her head. If that's what happened to you, and that's why you have an aversion to Silas Marner, and you are now over 30, pick it up again. Read it twice. Silas Marner is one of the greatest novels in the English language.
Yes, it starts out sad, as our pathetic hero looses both his trust in humanity and his faith in God. But the power of love replaces his lust for money, and wins out in the end. Meanwhile, morally poor but financially rich, high-living Godfrey Cass provides a counterpoint to simple Silas. At the end there's a surprise when the fate of Godfrey's evil brother is revealed.
When you're all done, before you file Silas Marner on the shelf, go back and read the paragraph about Silas' thoughts when he discovers that his hordes of coins are missing. If you have ever felt sudden extreme loss, you will recognize the stages of despair from disbelief to acceptance "like a man falling into dark water." Which is why this book is not suitable for children, and is most appreciated by those who have undergone their own moral redemption.
Silas has been the inspiration for many other characters, including Dicken's Scrooge. He has been portrayed in movies, including "A Simple Twist of Fate" starring Steve Martin. But none is as good as the original. If you haven't read it since junior high, try it again. Silas Marner is an excellent book. There's a gem of human understanding in every chapter.

A Tale of the Redeeming Power of Love

Silas Marner is an excellent classic novel set in early Nineteenth Century England. In this story, George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans) depicts a man named Silas Marner, a weaver by trade. He lives happily in his home town of Lantern Yard, until his best friend William Dane betrays him by setting him up as a thief. William then marries Silas' fianc�e, and Silas is shunned from the town. He eventually settles in a very small cottage in Raveloe, where he spends his days making cloth and other materials for the townspeople. Due to his now secretive and reclusive ways, the people of Raveloe never really come to know Silas, and he lives in solitude, having turned away from his former faith and happiness.
But one winter's night, a small orphan girl comes to his house, and everything changes. Silas cares for the child (with the help of his neighbor, Mrs. Winthrop, whose family soon befriends him), and his heart begins to soften.
This is a very good representation of the redeeming power of love, and the consequences of a person's actions. For people who enjoy classic literature, this is definitely a must-read.

Pure gold

If you have a heart, the story of Silas Marner will warm it. You are better coming to it fresh, without knowing anything of the simple yet solid plot, so I will say nothing of it. I will just urge you to read this wonderful book. Eliot writes beautifully and from page one, you realize you are in the hands of a true artist. This is a very human, very English story of simple people living through those very basic emotions that make the world turn and give the universe meaning.

My favorite analysis textbook

I first encountered this textbook when I used it to study for the analysis prelim at UT the summer after my first year of graduate school. I had been studying Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis during the semester, and while Rudin is elegant and beautiful, this book is far more comprehensive and, most importantly to me, systematic. From the very beginning, Folland develops the theory of Borel measures on the real line in generality (whereas Rudin's "construction" of Lebesgue measure based on the Riemann integral is, in my opinion, incomprehensible). The treatment of general measure theory in this book is worth the purchase price on it's own, but Folland includes lots of material going well beyond the standard course on measure theory and integration. The most valuable chapters non-measure-theoretic chapters for me are the ones covering point set topology and the rudiments of functional analysis (Hilbert and Banach spaces, and a little bit about general topological vector spaces, but not much).

Graduate school is now behind me, but Folland's book continues to be my favorite reference for analysis and even point set topology. Admittedly I have not looked for analysis books in many years, but that's because Folland has met all my needs (in the interest of full disclosure I should say I'm a number theorist, not an analyst, but for what I do a good knowledge of analysis is essential).

If you're interested in the book to supplement a course in measure theory and abstract real analysis, or for self-study, I would say that the only background knowledge is the material in a standard undergraduate introduction to real analysis (perhaps sticking to metric space topology and treating Riemann integration rigorously). More important for reading the book is a capacity to understand and appreciate abstraction, and a reasonable level of mathematical maturity. I took an undergraduate course in general topology (using Munkres) which covered the material in Folland (most of it anyway) over the course of a semester, and I think this did more to prepare me for Folland (and advanced mathematics in general) than any other course I took. If you are comfortable reading and writing proofs (general topology being an excellent subject with which to cultivate these skills), then I think you will enjoy and learn a great deal from Folland's book.

Comprehensive and challenging

While trying to review and strengthen my foundations in measure theory and integration, I found this book.
It is tough reading to be sure, but it is easier to work through than Papa Rudin, and feels more "up to date" than Rudin.

I like Folland because he does not waste undue time developing the basics of measures. He sprints right through those (Chapters 1,2, and 3) and into Point-Set Topology in Chapter 4. I really enjoyed that chapter, since he goes into the applications to analysis (mostly locally compact Hausdorff spaces) pretty thoroughly. To compare with Royden (3rd edition), you have to wait until 2/3 of the way through to get to this point. By Chapter 5, you are ready for Functional Analysis, which is what I am teaching myself now. (I chickened out of Functional Analysis in grad school, and this has bothered me ever since!)

I will have to edit this review once I have gone through the rest of the book. Unlike 3rd edition Royden (I haven't seen the 4th edition, so I can't comment on that), by the time you finish Folland it appears that you will be ready for research in various branches of math that depend heavily on analysis.

Therefore, I would have to highly recommend this book. Just consult a more "basic" reference for your first look at measure theory. Jump into this book for a broader view of things.

The Best! book on the subject, hands down.

The Folland book is, by far, my favorite book on the subject. The exposition is extremely clean and concise (perhaps "dense" would be a better word). The text requires a little bit of work on the reader's part (some small gaps to fill), aside from the exercises (which is a good thing, in my opinion, for a text at the graduate level). It contains a very hefty amount of mathematics, as it functions as an introduction to Measure Theory/Integration, Topology, Functional Analysis, and Fourier Analysis.

Comparing with other books:

Rudin's "Real and Complex Analysis" isn't quite as comprehensive, regarding real variable theory. Also, the exercises in Rudin aren't quite as gentle.
The Royden, Wheeden/Zygmund, Stein/Shakarchi, and Kolmogorov/Fomin books are far less substantial, as texts and references.

I recommend the Folland book, though the Rudin book is good to have. Also, Donald Cohn's "Measure Theory" makes a great supplementary text, along with the Folland book. If not Folland, then try Cohn.

There are many other great books on "Real Variables." Let's face it: A one-year course in Real Variables, using this text, may cover only half of the book, leaving out much of the supplementary material on Harmonic Analysis/PDE's; and if a course does have time for some of the supplementary material, it might be preferable to go in a different direction (depending on the audience). For instance, the supplementary topics in Cohn's book include Polish spaces (and some of the beginnings of descriptive set theory), as well as the Bochner integral (none of which is included in Folland's text [for the exception of an exercise on vector-valued integration]). If you look at Halmos' Measure Theory or at the 3rd Edition of Royden, you'll find some very important and technical aspects of mappings between measure spaces which aren't in Folland's text. In Volume I of Dunford & Schwartz, you'll find the theory for finitely additive set functions, in general, as well as discussions of function spaces and spaces of measures (as Banach spaces).

Loved it, nice hearing the whole story

I enjoyed hearing what a man in recovery looks like, and how the woman needs healing too - so often it sounds like the guy is the only one that needs the help. The woman are left hurting and judging themselves for still hurting. This was a great book.

If you are living with a person with an addiction, a thoughtful insight

This book I would recommend to anyone who is living with or taking care of a person with an addiction. The book helps distance a person from their trying to fix someone else and reminds us that we can choose to live with someone else's choice but life is not about them. Take back the good person you are becoming, don't let someone else and their behavior's destroy you.

Very Insightful

This book has been incredibly helpful to me as part of the recovery process for myself, and helping my boyfriend. I have retread this book countless times, and each time I find something new that resonates with me. This book also helped prompt me to attend a local 12 step program for spouses while my boyfriend attends his 12 step. Thank you to Rhyll for being brave enough to share her story and journey. Anyone struggling through this type of situation should most definitely buy a copy of this book and keep it readily available.

Delicious!

The content is probably not new to a marketing professional who keeps current for example Sheena Iyengar's book The Art of Choosing covers some of this material as does Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, Outliers: The Story of Success and Brains: How They Seem to Work (FT Press Science).

However this book brings together and presents this information with the focus on marketing and sales. The authors prose are easy to read and engaging and the examples are all drawn within the purchasing decisions context. The author center's his discussion around Daniel Kaanheman's Nobel Prize winning research framework on human decision making and how that is exploited. I really enjoyed this book and think marketing professionals and general readers will too.

After reading the book I wondered if the author's choice of cover, ratio of words to diagrams/illustrations/pictures and chapter lengths had influenced why I liked this book so much - so I dropped it a star just in case ...

Honestly the most impressive part of the book is how beautiful the physical book is. The layout is flawless, the pages are glossy and high quality, and the entire book is in full color with lots of illustrations.

The audience is more specific than I anticipated. It seems to be exclusively written to people working at huge firms selling tangible products that have large marketing budgets and no background in psychology. If you fit into that category, that's great and you will get quite a lot out of this book.

Unfortunately for me, I really don't fall into that category at all. My undergrad degree was in psychology and a lot of the principles and studies he talks about we covered repeatedly throughout college. At this point, they're unoriginal and cliche. That's fine if you're not familiar with them, but if you've ever taken an upper level psych course, there isn't a whole lot of new information here. The applications are sometimes interesting, but I do think he could have been a bit more original than how people perceive optical illusions, for example.

The other disappointment I had is that "buying" refers exclusively to tangible products in this book. In fact, it was so specific to products and brands (think Coke, deoderant, cars, Tropicana, etc.) that I had a hard time extrapolating much of anything to take away for my small service based business. It's great that when people are walking through a store they choose one product over another for whatever reason, but what about when they're looking for a service? How do people choose then? I think service based industry deserved at least a chapter, or a mention or something.

It's also really not geared toward small business. It assumes that as you're applying these principles you'll have a marketing team with a large budget.

The book had some interesting points and as I mentioned, if you're in a specific category of people by all means pick it up and read it. The writing is engaging and if you're not familiar with the material already it will be fascinating. Otherwise, I would look for something more specific to your situation. This is definitely not one for everybody.

What Marketers Need to Know about Decision Science

This book is written by a marketing expert for marketers. It takes information about decision making from recent studies in economics and neuropsychology and provides clear applications to everyday marketing decisions.

Here are just a few of the big points you'll learn in this book:
* Strong branding encourages shoppers to make decisions without logical decision-making.
* Most marketing communications need to deliver their core message in seconds (like -- 2 to 4 seconds).
* It's easier to change behaviors than beliefs, and changes in belief often follow changes in behavior.

The book offers a very readable main narrative. There is also a "Science box" in most chapters which lays out the basic research that supports the applications proposed in the chapter, with references. each chapter ends with a summary: "What we have learned in this chapter/ What this means to us as marketers."

There are lots of research reports. We learn, for example, that brain scans have found that seeing a product activates pleasure centers while seeing a price activates parts of the brain associated with pain. Asked whether or not they would buy the product they saw, subjects made yes/no decisions in line with the relative intensity of the pleasure involved in thinking of the product compared with the pain of paying the price -- that's how our brains decide whether an item is worth buying.

These research reports are aligned with case studies mostly involving consumer goods. For example, the pleasure/pain ratio described above is followed by an examination of brands of shower gel. One brand makes a satisfying click when opened and has a bottle that suggests greater power by using visual cues associated with cars and high performance. The consumer reaching for this brand is buying a powerful morning jump start -- which is worth more than mere soap, and therefore commands a higher price.

There are also "Suggestion" boxes recommending that we take immediate actions like checking our strategic papers to make sure that they take our customers' goals into account or thinking about items we've purchased based on the brand rather than the benefits or features of the item.

Through this combination of basic information about human information and emotion processing with practical marketing information, the book explores the path from initial awareness of a product to purchase of that product, considering issues like branding, packaging, and usability.

This is a book to be studied and used. It would be a great book for a study group or even a class. It's also a fascinating read for marketers and those interested in decision science.

About the Author

Mr. Walter R. Niessen, the president of Niessen Consultants (Andover, Massachusetts), is an internationally recognized consultant in process analysis, design, impact assessment, planning and start-up, and operations assistance drawing on 50 years experience in applied combustion technology, air pollution control and solid, sludge, liquid, and gaseous waste management. He has prepared over 95 technical papers, contributed chapters to nine environmental engineering books, and authored the definitive text and reference Combustion and Incineration Processes. He has been involved in numerous solid waste and biosolids management planning studies and implementation projects for industry and for small jurisdictions through larger cities and regions; and in numerous international assignments in the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Mr. Niessen received his BS (1960) and MS (1961) in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers in both solid waste and air pollution control and member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Sigma Xi research honorary, and the Air and Waste Management Association. He is a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Among his honors, he received the Pioneer Award of ASME and the IT3 in 2008 for his lifetime educational and research efforts in incineration and waste management. He served as a Senior Vice President with Camp Dresser & McKee Inc. (CDM) from 1976 to 1997 where he still functions as a senior consultant with the firm. Prior affiliations were with the U.S. Air Force; Arthur D. Little Inc.; Bolt, Beranek & Newman; and Roy F. Weston Inc.
