This comprehensive and coherent account presents the 'state of the art' econometric analysis of tropical deforestation, quantifying and examining the local and underlying global causes.
The contributors are distinguished authors from developed and developing countries, and are based in research institutions and international agencies. They provide a global view of key issues such as population, debt, income and poverty and agricultural development. In addition, country and regional case studies are presented, focusing on the causes of deforestation in Latin America and Asia, and the role of the tropical timber trade is subjected to particular scrutiny. Katrina Brown (editor) is Senior Research Associate at CSERGE, University of East Anglia, and has a background in natural and social sciences. Her work concentrates on the conflicts between development and environmental degradation, and on social and economic aspects of the conservation of biodiversity. David Pearce (editor) is Professor of Economics at University College London and Director of CSERGE, which is the UK's premier research centre examining global environmental issues. He is an internationally renowned environmental economist, has published more than fifty books, and has been awarded the UNEP Global 500 roll of honour.
