About the Author
Shanny Jean Maney is both a performance poet and teacher. With Robbie Q. Telfer, she co-founded The Encyclopedia Show, a radical literary reading/spectacular which now runs in venues all across the globe. In March of 2010, the Chicago Encyclopedia Show won the Orgie (short for Original) Theatre Award for 2009's "Best Creation/Curators." Maney continues to co-curate the original show in Chicago.

HOW TO MAKE A GIANT COOKIE Youʼve got a favorite cookie recipe, yeah? Well get it out! Iʼll wait. OK, read it through. If it calls for something other than butter, burn it on the spot. You are worth real butter. Do you have a cast iron skillet? Everyone should have a cast iron skillet. If you own one piece of kitchen equipment, make it a cast iron skillet. They are cheap and strong. You are worth a cast iron skillet. Youʼve gotta see where this is going. Make the dough. Smack it into the skillet. Bake the skillet ʻtil the cookie is done. 375�F? 25-35 minutes? Youʼll know. Call your honey over. If your cute sweetie doesnʼt swoon over that yum-cookie smell and smooch you on the spot, think long and hard. Go ahead. Iʼll wait. If the butterʼs not butter, itʼs not butter. If the cookieʼs not done, itʼs not good. If your sweetie ainʼt sweet, start over. Ainʼt more complicated than that.

Music to my brain!

I wish I could do the video review for this book (my computer is not sciencey enough). You would see a gigantic I-Love-Science!-induced grin across my face. Friendly, accessible poetry that you can enjoy on the surface or choose to dig deeper and consider over a drink. A great book to read through, then keep on your nightstand to pick through before bed. I highly recommend this compact and concentrated volume for your collection. The only knock I have is the cover. Sad to see a kid get shot by light like that. A bit too graphic for me.

You can do it

Sometimes we say things. Like "I hate poetry." Then we readr things like Shanny's book and we say "Oh. Nevermind. Remember that thing I said? Totally not true."
This collection of poems will make you laugh out loud. Embarrassingly loud. In public. Then. You'll cry. I promise you. If you have any heart within you. Your soul will reach out and hug the author...and she will feel the embrace.
You can read poetry. You can do it.

I had anxiously been awaiting the publication of this book. I was GIDDY when it showed up on the
I think this might be one of the most artfully crafted books in Write Bloody's cannon. The organization using the scientific process . . . I thought it was gimmicky but logical when I flipped through the book, but after reading it, it is so, so perfect. The way that poems overlap and reference each other, the way the order of the poems allows them to converse and inform each other, the way certain poems that are contradictory to that moment in the narrative rest perfectly and seem perfect and right and breathe and good.
It's such a good book. It is so artful, and not just the poems (which are, yes, yes), but the way every choice, every placement, helps create this narrative. The way living is so hard and so precious and so simple.
As a writer, it is intimidating. As someone who strives to do those things, it is encouraging. As a poet with a billion different poems about a billion different things, it makes a book feel so far off. It also makes me want to try. As a female writer and performance artists, I am very aware of how hard it can be to be truthful about the female experience, and Ms. Maney does it with such tenderness, humor, and hope. The exploration of her miscarriage and the careful living done in its wake make "The Real Monster" one of the most heart-breaking moments in poetry that I've ever experienced.
My heart broke a million times. It also healed in the most magnificent and honest ways.
This book is intelligent, sincere, accessible, hilarious, well crafted, honest, and full of everything I aspire to as a woman and a writer. It turned my heart into a prism, and I can ask nothing more of a book.
